New Sign WELCOMES Oregon Visitors!

Welcome to our friendly little town!

One of our artists, Cheryl Wainwright, has crafted a unique welcome sign to Happy Camp. At the corner of Davis Road and Indian Creek Road, across from Parry’s Market, is a bright red and white painted antique truck with a sign, “Happy Camp, Welcome!”

Cheryl and her daughter completed the erection of the sign this week. At other attempts, part of the sign broke but now repairs have been made and we hope this will make folks coming from Oregon feel our sincere Happy Camp Welcome!

This sign is just two blocks from where Cheryl’s previous big project, the Bigfoot Sculpture, rises at the intersection of Davis Road and Hwy 96 in front of the Siskiyou Klamath At Center. With Ralph Starritt, a well known Siskiyou County artist, and with community help gathering materials, the Bigfoot was assembled. Many visitors to our community like to have their photos taken with our Bigfoot!

Dennis Day’s Dreamcatcher, “The World’s Largest Dreamcatcher” of it’s kind is also located on the two block stretch of Davis Road, making it the artistic center of this small town.

Youth do Summer Yard Work

Youth do Yard Work for Church
Youth do Yard Work for Church

The Youth of the Happy Camp Christian Fellowship were busy in the heat of summer, doing yard work. The church bought property on Park Way in Happy Camp, including the car wash on Hwy 96. But, as with all things, weeds and blackberries sometimes tend to take over a place. So the young people have been working at the property to cut back on the blackberries.

Pastor Kirk Eadie, Alex, James, Abigail, Joosie, and Ciera were at the church property doing some weeding. Tomorrow, Abigail will be cooking up a storm with another girl who wants to go to camp, too. They have been having bake sales in front of Parry’s for money for camp.

This weekend, James and Alex will be heading out to Camp Bradley’s High School Camp. The boys will be back on Friday, then they will turn around on Sunday and leave again for Camp Ford, High School Rafting and Camping Trip. These boys are going to be bushed… Keep your prayers up for them and their stamina…. the parents too…

The girls still have time to earn their way to camp as it is later in the summer. Thanks all who have helped and supported their efforts.

The Students are taught in Sunday School at 10:30 on Sunday morning at the Happy Camp Elementary School, when services for the whole family are held. The older students are taught by Dave (Mookie) Culbert while the younger elementry students are taught by Robyn Eadie. Alternate weeks Dan and Judy Bushy assist the teens to teach the younger students. Everyone is welcome to attend the Happy Camp Christian Fellowship on Sunday at 10:30 at the Elementary School on Park Way.

FUN at Kids Fair at the River Park!

Saturday was a perfectly fantastic day in Happy Camp for the 11th Annual Kids Fair. The River Park, as always, was a beautiful venue for the event. If you got a little hot, there was plenty of water to splash down the waterslide to cool you down in a jiff!!
Tables were set up in the shade on the lawn for art and craft projects; wooden boxes or picture frames to decorate, butterflies to paint, and beads and trinkets to make fabulous works of art. This was compliments of the Siskiyou Arts Bus Project and the kids loved it!

Coloring Contest was won by Ashley Aubrey, Sarah Harrison, Beatrice Edwards, and Maranda Rasmussen. Dancers, my how these kids moved, made it difficult to decide upon winners. Prizes were presented to Justice (football), Chaance Rasmussen (high power squirtgun) and Sarah Harrison (ball and bat.) Caitlyn doing some really good dancing and “jump, to get the wiggle out!” so all the kids used up great amounts of energy!

Amber Curtis was putting alphabet and glimmering beads on a wooden box for decoration to show the kids like Madeline Davis who wre creating beautiful projects!

Annie Kramer, of Heal Therapy, sang the most cheerful and appropriate songs during the activities. It was such a pleasure to meet Annie, and her music was the perfect backdrop to all the action. Her music was enjoyed by the adults as well as the kids, especially “Puff the Magic Dragon!” They even sang a special song to Smokey Bear…and guess who showed up for his picture!

If you got hungry, Cliff Stockton was at the grill preparing hot dogs, while Carol Sharp dished up cups of fruit. There was also a nutritional display with Michele Harris combining fresh strawberries and peaches and other delicious ingredients blended together.

Vickie Waddell had little tooth holders for the first lost tooth as well as toothbrushes and other products to keep the children in good dental health. Vickie represented the Karuk Dental Clinic. Children who wished to sit still long enough could have a tattoo painted on an arm. Adults were usually the ones sitting in the shade.

Forest Service staff had some games going, a relay with a fire hose to get these future firefighters trained. They were awarding ice cream cones!! Kyle Stockton managed the bean bag game and awarded prizes to the best throwers of beanbags into Bigfoot’s wide open mouth. Craig Reece had another game going for the kids, but they soon became too warm for the playground equipment and regular games and headed for the water slide!

All in all, the 11th annual Kids Fair was fun for the kids, their families and those of us who enjoy seeing kid’s smiles! Thank you to the Family Resource Center, Karen, Nadine and Alicia and Rachel and all of the other volunteers who were such great troopers and made a fun day for all!

2009-2010 School Year Ends in Awards!

2010 Graduates Recessional

HCHSA Students of the Year

Carly Hammon & Andrew Bley, Students of the Year

The 09-10 School year has concluded with a really encouraging Award Assembly at the school. There were awards for fun things, some for academics and even the “Students of the Year” presentations.

Denise Bearding announced one of the “Students of the Year,” for the 2009/2010 school year, Carly Hammon. Carly “has an excellent academic record, with a grade-point average above 4.0. She has taken additional courses through College of the Siskiyous and Brigham Young University, and as the top student in her class has achieved the title of Valedictorian. In addition, Carly played all sports, and excelled at them. She participated in our variety shows, helped create yearbooks, wrote for local newspapers, and had artwork in juried gallery shows. She sets high standards for herself and achieves them, while maintaining a strong set of family values. She is an honor to our school, and we congratulate her on this award.”

Dorie Ekman-McDonald announced the other student of the school year, Andrew Bley. Andrew “is an incredible young man who has accomplished great things throughout his high school career, mostly, I believe because he marches to the beat of a Different Drummer. He walks the walk and talks the talk! He is humble and yet dynamic. Some of his accomplishments have been receiving straight A’s for most of his 4 years at Happy Camp High, with the help of only the Internet, Andrew taught himself to play the guitar, with the help of former students, he created a Christian band called “Reign Down.“ Andrew has led Campus Life for 4 years, has guided and inspired other students in their walk and faith as well, is in charge of the whole music ministry at his church in the Meadows and he is the person to call if your computer messes up! With great pleasure and pride, I present the “Student of the Year” award to Andrew Bley. Way to go, Andrew!”
