Have a Blessed, Garbage FREE Day!!

At this glad time of year when there is so much celebration with Hanukkah and Christmas and all they bring, sometimes sadness creeps in, like the Grinch that stole Christmas. Sometimes there are sad memories or missing loved ones who are far away now, but that is usually balanced with the happy and joyous memories of Christmas past.

However, should sad things come along that might ruin the celebration, remember the Rule of the Garbage Truck applies. A recent e-mail explained that “many people are like garbage trucks, they run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger and disappointment.

As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Don’t take it personally, Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on.

Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets of Happy Camp.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets.

So Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don’t. Life is 10% what you make it and 90% how you take it. Have a blessed, garbage-free day!”

Western Holiday Celebration in Seiad Valley

Western Style Christmas in Seiad


Thursday night after Happy Camp Elementary School had their program, the Seiad Elementary School also had a Holiday program. What a rollicking fun Western time we had!!! The students were in calico and cowboy hats with bandanas. The kindergarteners even had horses! They were of the stick variety, not live horses. They were quite appropriate for the song, about a Cowboy needs a horse.

Students came in and sat on hay bales which fit right in with the western theme. Their program had a lot of music, by band, choir and individual students, as well as stories and presentations. First the choir sang Deck the Halls. The Band played Jolly Old St. Nicholas and Go Tell Aunt Rodie. Wren Crapser and Aleesha Lange performed Shady Grove with the first and second grade dancers. A group played recorders for Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Kaleia Caston told the legend of mistletoe. Jordan McCartney preformed Snowman and Old MacDonald. Katreese Crawford performed Watercolors and Jingle Bells before the first graders and kindergarteners rode in on their horses.

After The Twelve Days of Christmas, Phoenix Stoner performed Santa’s Sleigh and Morning Prelude. Treva Crawford played an Old English Air and the band played Ode to Joy. Devin Jackson and Allison Head played Jingle Bells and Cyrus and Treva Crawford performed What Child is This?” The last song of the program was a fun piece, Merry Christmas Neighbor, by the entire choir. Then Santa arrived and all the babies first had an opportunity to sit on his lap, which some appreciated and some objected to!

It was fun to see how much the kids we don’t see often had grown. Jeffrey Kanawyer came up to say he had read the column about the proposed Siskiyou Crest National Monument in the newspaper. When they become mature enough to be reading the newspaper to learn about things, you have to be impressed at how they’ve grown up!

Happy Seniors All Set for the New Year!

The Log Memorial Building was decorated and the tree stood at the front of the room.

Before the festivities, the Happy Seniors thanked the officers of the past year and asked them to continue to do the great job that has been done in the past.

Friday, December 17th was a special get together for the Happy Seniors. They enjoyed a great potluck (best pot pie I’ve ever tasted!) and lots of other yummy things to eat! They tended to business first, reelecting President Anita Wolf, Vice Presidents Carol Day and Charley Fehley. The Secretary will continue to be Jeanne Burrer and Treasurer Pauline “Sis” Attebery. Maxine McCoy will serve again on the building committee. When the officers were installed, the BINGO games began.

Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce Meets January 7th

The NEW YEAR begins in Happy Camp with a Chamber of Commerce Meeting. Friday, January 7th will be the first meeting of the Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce of 2011.

The meeting will begin at the Grange at 5 o’clock with spaghetti dinner. Bring a salad to share for supper and then stay for the meeting. Since the Board of Directors was only Dinah Sulipeck as President and James Buchner as Treasurer and filling in as secretary, new directors have been appointed as directed by the bylaws. The five added directors are Cathleen Searle, Kirk Eadie, Montine Blevins, Pete and Terry Winslow. Cathleen will be sending out the minutes as Secretary. This board will serve until directors are elected on March 1st.

The membership dues were returned to $50. If paid now, membership will run through March of 2012.

The new board expressed their appreciation for the work of the former Board of the Chamber.

The website belonging to Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce is also missing and any information leading to it’s recovery would be greatly appreciated. The Chamber phone is 493-2900 answered by Dinah, Chamber president.

Musical Addition to Holiday Dinner

Wainwrights music, Holiday Dinner in Happy Camp

Much to the enjoyment of the Christmas Eve Dinner guests, the Wainwright family from Happy Camp provided a musical backdrop.

Thanks to Karen Derry, Nadine and the staff and volunteers at the Family Resource Center who put on the Community Dinner on December 24th. Papa Tiraterra was a special hit, and the Wainwright family, Jim, Cheryl, Laura (Senior at State University) as well as a friend from Canada, who played and sang during the meal.

It was especcially good to see some of the students who have been away from Happy Camp for further education who returned for the holidays – Andrew Bley, Craig Reece and Laura Wainwright among them.

Thank you to all the volunteers who cooked, baked, served and cleaned up after the community dinner.

Happy Camp Elementary Holiday Show

Patti Sherman had a bunch of Rocket students beating rhythms on drums and other percussion instruments. They practice after school and were amazing! After Casey Chambers welcomed everyone the 2nd & 3rd graders sang Rudolph and Jingle Bell Rock, Rock around the Christmas Tree. These beautiful singers were Syvana Arwood, Michael Beals Jr. Colin Brannon, Mekhia Gabriel, Keelan Hahn, Christian Kienlen, Chelsea Post, Rose Shuler, Shaggy Spence, Ian Tuttle, Hawkeye Valin and Matthew Wilson.

Rudtz Galindo played a piano solo and a duet with Eddie Davenport. The 1st & 2nd graders sang All I want for Christmas in My Two Front Teeth. Alyvia Arwood, Kaylee Bangs, Madeline Davis, Bridgett Aubrey-Harrison, Luke Robinson, Elyssa Thom, Timothy Thompson, Jessica Williams, Hannah Wilson. Elijah Beals, Blake Beals, Jozlynn Brink, Taylor Cortes, Kairi Harrison, Kimi Harrison Zachary Horvath, Justin Kroll, Luis Loya, Kohl Pinassi, Layla Titus, and Alexis Williams.

Then wise people with gold, frankincense and myrrh came on stage! They were accompanied by large colorfully wrapped packages. The Gifts that Don’t Cost was performed by the 4th grade class. The gifts were Joy, Peacebuilder, and Friendship etc. Lovely young Ella Galindo, was a beautifully decorated tree. The class sang O Christmas Tree and We Three Kings.
The 5th and 6th graders sang a rollicking version of Twelve Gifts of Christmas. Brittany Barnett, Dakota Estep, Maria Griffin, Malford “Chuuk” Harrison, Madison Offield, Matilda Peters, Lu-Lin Spence, Aaron Tuttle, Devon Tygart, Gage Welter, Travis Bledsoe, Kai Crockett, Samuel Davis, Beatrice Edwards, Nikkita Harrison, Miranda Hayes, Quinn Horvath, Curtis Kienlen, Carl Mayton, Jacob Rachal, Meranda Rasmussen, Nancy Shuler, Christopher Wilson and Silas Yamamoto. Silas kept singing the praises of the transistor radio!

The 7th and 8th graders had a special presentation of The Giving Tree, performed by Carl Blossomgame, Mitch Hokanson, Sydney Snider, Isabel Bryant, Emily Parry, Cierra Silva, Angel Griffin, Natalia Long, Jack Spence, Abigail Eadie, Ryan Randleman, Cody Sindle, Shawn Hillman Chauncey Lloyd, River Tuttle, Cody Haskell, Christian Robinson, and Taylor Soto. Mitch Hokanson also played some beautiful piano .

It was time for the littlest students to sing Up on the House Top and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. The kindergarteners who sang were Ernie Beals, James Bledsoe, Emilie Cushman, Jason Day, Isabell Gomez, Charles Harrison, Michael Hauki, Devon Honza, Jessica Lantow, Alex Loya, Emily Mattson, Logan Nelson, Luis Osorio, Willow Rose, Priscilla Weeks and Spencer Wreath Jr.

The students returned to sing Winter Song first in the Karuk language , then in English. Then in a grand finale they sang We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

Cody Sindle was the stage hand helping everyone for the performance. The teachers and staff at the school did an excellent job preparing the students for the performance.
