2012 Bigfoot Jamboree!!

It is coming!!

Bigfoot Jamboree is August 31 – September 2nd.

The Happy Camp Coordinating Council has been busy and are planning this years event. Mark your calender and out on your thinking cap. How will you participate this year. Will you be working in a booth to support your favorite organization? Will you have a beautiful float in the parade? Time to think ahead!

Silver Anniversary HC Chamber of Commerce

It was a very hot evening in July, 1986. The sound of Elk Creek rushing over rocks and pebbles was the background noise. A congenial group of Happy Camp citizens gathered at the Elk Creek Campground at the end of the day. Jim and Carol Jones hosted the business leaders of the Happy Camp community.

They were concerned about the promotion of the businesses of the little community on Highway 96 along the Klamath River. They wanted to advertise, but advertising took more than each business alone could pay. Therefore the idea had been proposed to cooperate together and pool their funds to make the best advertising that would promote Happy Camp. It was decided that each business could put $50 in the kitty to pay for advertising, perhaps a billboard out on Interstate 5 that would bring visitors down Highway 96 to Happy Camp.

Who was at that meeting?

Ben Rosser was the owner of Forest Lodge Motel.

Charlotte was owner of Evans Mercantile started by the Evans family. Guy and Ora Head ran the store until Guy was killed in a train collision and Ora had continued with son.

Adamsons owned Larry’s Market

Jean

It was a small group.  But they were the entrepreneurs and business circle of Happy Camp.

1986-1991

1992-1998

1998-2002

2003-2007 Crusin’ the Klamath, with numbers of beautiful antique cars came down the Klamath River for the Show and Shine!

2006  This was the year that celebrated TWENTY YEARS of the  HC CofC and 150 years of town of Happy Camp!  John Gould chaired the committee for another very successful Rollin on th River. The Chamber gave the Happy Camp Community Services District our annual contribution to upgrade the River Park, this year $3,000.

At the first meeting April 4, 2007 Chris Sorenson was president. The previous treasurer, rosemary Boren,  had handed over the books, and there was $9,672-93 in the Chamber bank account besides the Chamber trailer that was used as office at events such as Rollin’ on the River Bike Rally and held archived records. Instead of the regular weekly Wednesday lunch meetings that the Chamber had held for decades, besides the monthly first Tuesday evening meeting, the new chamber officals decided to correspond by emails. Members of the Board were Chris Sorenson, Roberta Arneson Rita Manley, Lehel Garami (Treasurer) Roberta Collum, Montine Blevins and Jon Grunbaum. Four signs were place in Oregon on Waldo Road for $1,200.

Although there are no minutes for elections in 2008 or 2009, the minutes for July 20, 200- show Ian Tripp as President, Dinah Sulipenck as vice president, Carly Manley as treasurer and Rita King and Lisa West as co-secretarys with Charles Brown, Dave Wrobleski, Michelle Wrobleski, high school student Majestah West and Victoria Pope as board members. Later letterhead shows Dinah as president, Carly Manley as Vice President, Rita King as Secretary, Victoria Pope, Dave and Michelle, Charlie Mayton, Jody Jewell and Laurie Bowers as board members.

-December 11,2010 Dinah Sulipeck called the meeting to order, and there was discussion for a couple of hours on qualifications for members of the Chamber of Commerce. Roger Mooberry, Charles Mayten, Jody Jewel, and Rita Manley King resigned from the board leaving only Dinah Sulipeck, President and James Buchner, treasurer as directors. A meeting was held to restore the board to the seven members and Cathleen Searle was appointed as treasurer, Kirk Eadie, Montine Blevins, Pete Winslow and Terri Winslow were the new board members. Dinah did a great job on the Community Tree Lighting event which had been held by Family Resource Center last year, but was previously put on as the Chamber’s gift to the town for at least twenty years.

March 2011-elections, Cathleen Searle as president at a big free spaghetti dinner at the Grange.

Good wishes as Ruth Bain Retires!

John & Ruth Bain

John & Ruth Bain

Ruth Bain started to work at Happy Camp High School February 1978 and had experience as an attendance clerk and aide before beginning her position as secretary. Now, after 34 years in the High School she has decided to retire and visit more with family and grandchildren, which are her delight, and do gardening and handiwork at which she excels.

Happy Camp High School teachers and staff, past and present as well as representatives from the Siskiyou Union High School District gathered at the Happy Camp Grange for a farewell. Retired teachers such as Paul Trestrail, Terry & Roberta Everett, Hokinson represented by Diann and John Kufner were also there and spoke to the value of Ruth’s efforts in the school over the 34 years she faithfully and loyally kept the office. Bob Seaman shared how vital to the operation of the Happy Camp Grange Ruth has been also. Angelika Brown, new high school principal this year, presented Ruth with a beautiful crystal award.

River Girl has recently been published! It is so exciting to have a brand new book published by Linda Jo Martin of Happy Camp.

Linda writes novels in her spare time and this is for young girls and teens. It is a story of a young girl who comes to Happy Camp in the 1920’s. Although it is fiction, Linda takes her historical research very seriously!

It is most of all a very good story and I enjoyed it very much. It’s a lovely way for a young girl to enjoy a quiet summer afternoon reading!

It is available on Amazon, but you can stop in at Marble Mountain Gift Company and get a copy or at the Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce office weekdays. For further information on the book or the author see http://rivergirlclaire.com/.

Nothing as lovely as a day in June….

Fishing Derby sign on Connor's Fence

If it is true, that there is nothing as lovely as a day in June, than there is no place where it is lovlier than in Happy Camp!

Sometimes people tell us that there is “nothing to do” in a small town, especially one as remote as Happy Camp. People really think it is unbelievable that we could be 75 miles from a fast food place, or Walmart, movie theater or bowling! But look at all the wonderful things that we can enjoy that they can’t, unless they come here of course!!
School ended last week, so the kids are out hiking, swimming, and fishing…. and the annual FISHING DERBY at Kelly Lake is Saturday!! There will be kids getting prizes for the biggest and the smallest and the most fish. Kelly Lake is freshly stocked with Rainbow trout each year before this event. Then they have hotdogs for lunch and another day of happy HAPPY CAMP Memories stored away!

Saturday will also be the KIDS FAIR at the River Park. Face painting, games and activities, as well as refreshments and information for everyone. Thanks to Karen Derry and Nadine McElyea this annual event is wonderful for the kids.

Sunday, P.K. Halliman, the famous author will be speaking at the Happy Camp Christian Fellowship at 10:30. THe Fellowship meets at the Elementary School each Sunday at 10:30. Kirk Eadie is the pastor and Kirk will be leading the singing with Alex and Abbye Eadie. David “Mouche” Culbertson is the teacher of the teens, where everyone over ten has Sunday School. There is also classes for the ten and under. While Kirk has been going through the Psalms each Sunday of late, this is a special time for P.K. will be visiting us again. Everyone is welcome!! If you’ve ever read Heartprints or some of P.K.s other books for children to your kids, you’ll be interested to know his latest book is for adults. More on Church page…..

The Klamath Writer’s Club plans a potluck at Tanya’s deck overlooking the Klamath on Sunday. This group usually meets at the Happy Camp Chamber of commerce office at 35 Davis Road to the right of the Post Office. All writer’s are welcome. We are so happy and excited with the publishing of Linda J. Martin’s book, RIVER GIRL. Which is new! I enjoyed reading it so much before it was published and plan to give it to all our nieces! It is a great little book for a young girl to read about what it was like to come to Happy Camp in the 1920’s. You can read more about it at http://rivergirlclaire.com/

Then there are the Lawn Mower Races!! What?? You have never heard of lawn mower races (except for the kids race to get away from the chore????) Well, you must not live in Happy Camp then!! Lawm mower races are the big event by the Outdoor Club. Next week, hopefully, we will update you on who won…..if someone will please let me know!!

In the meanwhile, Happy Father’s Day to all the Daddy’s past and present!!
