Seiad Valley Volunteer Firefighters Fundraiser to begin with parade Saturday~

The other day Bob Humphries stopped by and mentioned he has chickens ready! They are ready for playing Chicken Poop bingo at the annual Seiad Day fundraiser for the Seiad Valley Volunteer Fire Department. It is always a fun day. It begins with the Parade right downtown Seiad Valley, at promptly (usually) 10 pm. You don’t want to be late or you’ll be a long way back and miss the best part of the parade! After the parade when you see lots of friendly people, everyone goes back to the Fire Hall, 44601 Highway 96 (Can’t miss it unless you miss Seiad Valley entirely!!) I always like to enjoy all the crafts they have at the booths and then get one of their delicious hamburgers for lunch 11 to 3. They have hot dogs, chips and nachos and lots of beverages and pops. There is a craft auction 3 to 5 and a Silent auction, which has beautiful things to bid for. There’s horseshoes and the kids have all kinds of games as well as popcorn and treats. They usually love the bounce house. Did I mention Chicken poop bingo? Later, when you are enjoying the nice winning craft you got from the auction, you can end the day with dinner and dance. Chicken or steak dinner is $15 or $20 for the big appetite for both, along with sides and cake. Children are $8. Last year Patty Grantham was on hand to talk with residents about the Eclipse fire, but although we can’t guarantee she will be there this year her coworker, Smokey Bear will no doubt be encouraging fire prevention!

It was so exciting to receive the new Siskiyou Pioneer, annual publication of the Siskiyou County Historical Society, in the mail this week. I’d hoped to go out Friday or Monday to stop by their office and pick it up and some other reading, but it already came. This is a very special look back to the out of pring 1964 Siskiyou Pioneer, plus other things as well.

Hole in the Earth Pottery was beautiful!

Seiad Valley is such a fun community! They work together so well and they sure do love their Volunteer Fire Department! That’s why the Seiad Day in August and the Craft Faire in November are such great events!! The proceeds go to the (All volunteer) Firefighters work.

When we first arrived we could see the tables that Les Helsley had set up outside with his wonderful pottery from Hole in the Earth Pottery. The bright colors were sparkling in the sun! There was a wide range of colors and designs, and even a 25% off table! There were only a couple of vendors set up outside as it was quite nippy even though the sun was shining beautifully. A lady had notebooks and folders and pictures that she had made. If I still had kids at home, I’d have loved the wipe-off charts for chores.

An evergreen with snowflake ornaments was the first thing you saw entering the Fire Hall! Tim Pinkos had leather work and there were nifty items by the wire-works skilled craftsman. I remember a few years ago he had a knight’s armor in wire that was so neat, but didn’t see that as most of the items were practical.
Some of the tables were high with placemats and colorful sewn items for the home. Someone put a lot of work into all those projects and they were lovely. There was woodworking too, but the woodworker had stepped away from his table when we were admitting his wood projects.

It was good to see Leona and Pete McLaughlin who not only had the beautiful jewelry Leona makes, but pretty little bags to use for giving them as gifts. She also had made carrot cupcakes with cream cheese frosting which are so delicious! Across from her was a display of beautiful large polished jade and other rock materials, made into belt buckles and other things. Floyd Brady had really beautiful stones!
Next to Floyd was Bob Humphries’ son, Chris. He had made Rice-Krispie bars, cookies as well as jam. The jams were cranberry and strawberry. Although they were tempting we didn’t want to eat until lunch which was chili, chowder, filled baked potato and bacon soup or sausage tortellini. I loved the potato and bacon soup, but I got the last bowl. So my husband got the tortellini, but he enjoyed that as well.

Seiad Valley Crafters Fund the Fire Hall Activities

Iris, Amber and Linda made such cozy blankets pillows and other fabric arts!

AFter lunch we browsed the rest of the Seiad Crafter Faire offerings!
Linda Thompson had cozy blankets that were just perfect for the chilly weather, in pillows. There were all kinds of lovely patterns and one that held a baby. A doll was shown with it and I thought my granddaughter’s doll would have loved it! Amber Ogborn and Iris Edwards were next to Linda at a table with beautiful things they had made. Cody Sindle was there, or I think he was under the hood hiding!

Right across from Linda, Amber and Iris was a table of beautiful frames by Annie Buma, Annie’s Custom Woodworking & Framing. She has hand-milled sugar Pine, Douglas-Fir and Ash wood, with bark on some, made into beautiful picture, or mirror or art frames.

There were cookies, candies and treats for sale to enjoy as well.

Some young girls, Hannah and Mercy, had a table they had candles, some arranged in polished wooden branches. They had a good bunch of things for sale. It was good to see youthful entrepreneurs!! All ages were there from the youth to the more mature. Mr. & Mrs Long had their beautiful woodworking items for sale.

Teri Colwell had soaps and lotions, of great variety. She was sharing a table with someone with flower arrangements as well. Jill also had some lotion, sustainably harvested in Siskiyou County!

Jill Livingston and her sister Kathryn had books. I love books so that was great1 They also had calendars with historic photos of Siskiyou County or beautiful photos of Mount Shasta. The item that really fascinated me was a series of brochures at only $.75 each of Campsite Critters—a camper’s guide. The text and illustrations were by Irene Brady. There was a guide to big animals like “Bears” and the wild cats and dogs, “Mountain Lion” and “Wolves”, to little animals, “Chipmunks.” And those tiny little guys, “Mosquitoes, Ticks, and Fleas!” When I say that the artful sketches are beautiful, it isn’t just the picture of the animal on the front, there are tracks, in the chipmunk one, about twelve other drawings as well as a map of their territory. In fact, Jill showed me on the back they have a little suggestion who you could begin trying to draw them yourself. I wished that there was one on otters or raccoons. In fact deer and elk would also be interesting. There is a lot of information on both sides of a four -fold brochure!!

Our neighbors along the beautiful wild, Klamath River are some very talented people! They had such a wide variety of skills represented and wonderful gifts to give for the coming holidays. It was all for a good cause, the Seiad Valley Volunteer Fire Department, so you know that the fire fighters also give their time and labor to the community. Seiad Valley has faced evacuation from forest fires four of the last five years and they appreciate the work of the Fire Fighters!! We have so much to be very thankful for!!

The Seiad Day of fun was Saturday, August 29. There was a parade right down Highway 96 from Seiad Creek Road to the Fire House.

All day long there were festivities at the Seiad Valley’s Volunteer Fire Department Fire House, 44601 Hwy. 96. Fun included a children’s bounce house, poker tournament, horseshoes, 50/50 raffle and chicken poop bingo.

There was a live auction with beautiful and unique hand crafted items and artwork to be treasured. Proceeds helped the Volunteer Fire Department.

Steak or chicken dinner was just before the dance with Blue Stew until midnight,

Seiad Day is a big event in the little town of Seiad Valley. Being one of those little places along Highway 96 where you might be missed if someone closed their eyes, they nonetheless are not lacking in community spirit. This is especially true when it comes to the local Seiad Valley Volunteer Firefighters!! The firefighters are greatly appreciated and supported by the community. One way is by the Seiad Day activities.

This year Seiad Day began with a Fun Run. You could Run (or walk) one mile or three and get your blood pumping for the rest of the day’s activities. Then it was time to line up for the Seiad Day parade. First came the sirens. The rescue vehicles came down the street and the crowd cheered their appreciation of them, although the kids scramble for candy. Mario Gomez was driving the Forest Service truck with Smokey Bear!

Connie, Rebecca, Gwen and Pat are the lady Miners from Mid River RV park and about the ‘best old crazy’ gold diggers call themselves. Mid-River Lady Miners.

River Valley 4H Club had Philomena, Rita, and Zoey Walsh, Jeffrey Kanawyer, Abigail Eadie, Natalie Driskell, Gabriella, Michael and Christopher Riehm, Nonna Simmons with their current year awards and projects. They gave special Thanks to Jennifer Johnson for her help with the Gardening project and Richard McLearan and Seiad Mini-Storage for donation of the quad for their float. The 4 H leaders are Danielle Riehm-Cruz and Rebecca Sehuh.

Wes Timbrook was driving Brian Helsapple’s State of Jefferson tractor. Brian Helsapple was the man who started the Seiad Day and for many years was the announcer. Brian was also the ‘spark’ behind the Klamath River Chamber of Commerce and an active leader in not only birding and such, but also many community activities.

All the Way from Happy Camp were Gini, Ivan and Jerry in a balloon-covered car inviting one and all to come buy antiques at Siskiyou House! Ron Heatherington drove his Model A Ford from ’29.

Representing the Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack 52 was Vickie Simmons, Chairman and James Simmons, Jeffrey Kanawyer, and Michael Riehm. Some others who were in both 4H and Boy Scouts didn’t make the quick change to go around twice.

Then came the horsewomen, Sam O’Reilly rode Joey; Victoria Jones rode Sammy and Kelsea McLearan. Peggy Goshgarian came on Sunny and Hellsley while Bill had Freddy. Bill later introduced me to Johnny and Florence and some of the other mules who are so friendly and like big Labrador dogs who like to be petted and scratched and given some attention. These are some of the animals that help packing in work crews and supplies to accomplish work on the trails of the wilderness areas.

After the parade there were numerous games for the children, and a bounce house that looked like a clown that was particularly fun. Snow cones and popcorn were available thanks to teenage helpers. They also did the ping-pong ball toss, the shotgun (cork) duck targets, the twirling wheel of prizes and other games for the little tykes.

In the meantime the Horseshoe tournament was getting started on the lawn. Smokey Bear was posing for pictures while his helpers handed out posters and goodies for the kids. There were beautiful wooden toys and objects for sale by a woodworker. The Klamath Valley Four H Club had a display of trophies, plaques and ribbons that they had won, some from the fair. Chicken poop bingo was also surrounded by crowd cheering the reluctant fowl on.

One of the big fundraisers is the auction of donated items. There were woodworking, sewing, ink stitches and paintings. Almost every imaginable craft has a craftsperson in Seiad Valley busy making something to auction at the Fire Hall. It was fun just to see all the items. A Care-bear Quilt and an old barn sketch were some of the items. White Elephant items, some really treasures, were offered at silent auction. The bidding was hearing up all morning to be the last to make the winning bid!

Hamburgers and snacks were also available at the Seiad Fire Hall. Later in the evening a big dinner would take place and the evening end with a community dance with Bluestews making music.
