Perhaps you recall Cy Jensenj, well known from the story of Dear Mad’m by Stella W. Patterson, when he was called “Up’nUp”. Do you remember the days down by Ferry Point south of the Clear Creek post office when he was mining with Fred Crooks, “DearSir” in the story.
Thanks to Roberta, we’ve found that Laura came from Trinity (there was hint in the book!!) and they went to Washington to be married.
Do you remember the years along the Klamath, when a couple of men could bring in gold and fish along the Klamath River?? Stella turned 80 years old in 1946 and wrote the book, DearMad’m about a year deciding if a woman of her age could live the adventurous life on the River.
Tell us your stories and remembrances of those wonderful ol’ days along the Klamath River!! Thanks!!

The Chamber of Commerce always keeps a calendar, and tries to keep it updated as much as is possible.
Summer, winter, autumn, and now Spring!!! Things are always changing! New events POP UP sometimes. Baseball games are canceled. But, trying to put it on Facebook, didn’t work. Well, it may work for the weekdays but cuts out the weekends—and we know you want to know what is happening on the weekends as well, or perhaps more.
Happy Camp and our Klamath Neighbors are wonderful volunteers, and many of them KEEP THINGS GOING in many spheres. But, remembering back to the first Rolling on the River July 4th….Rosemary got 100 volunteers to help with the event!! True, everyone got to be there, but the last accounting of Rolling on the River, $3,000 was contributed to the electric and services needed at the River Park from the 2006 ROR when James Buchner was President of the Chamber. That was wonderful, but some volunteers have moved, or passed on. There is always a need for new participants to continue to make things better and keep things going!!
So, here is the April Calendar, and we hope that it will look better than the Facebook. It was 884 KB and the media space is only 64K so we will see how it turns out!!

HAPPY CAMP FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

The Happy Camp Family Resource Center (FRC) is a busy place Monday through Thursdays from 9 to 5 for sure. We used to have both a Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion, and their auxiliary organizations but after they ceased to serve our veterans, the Sheriff’s office sent some help for Veterans through the Family Resource Center. The Veterans have a social hour at the FRC at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays.
The FRC also offers a Soup Sociall Mondays from 11 to 1 for those who desire some visiting social time over soup. They provide legal referrals, social security and child support help on the first Tuesday of the month. They offer Behavioral Health Service, playgroups for the youngsters, family and parenting classes.
On this Wednesday the FRC will have a Family Night and make Valentine craft. The Head Start Parent Meeting will also be included in this time on Wednesday from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the FRC at 38 Park Way. The FRC is also asking for help from people with artistic, craft, and all kinds of other talents and abilities to lead groups. They just need the helping hands of those with those skills and abilities and to lead a group. Let them know what you’d like to participate in!! Their phone number is 493-5117.
Friday, Rochelle Randles told the story of a father and son were enjoying a day on the water at the Manatee River, not the Klamath. Their adventure became frightening when the boat hit an underwater object, overturned and throwing them into the water! A Boy Scout troop had set up camp within earshot of the accident, and you know Boy Scouts motto is to always be prepared.As soon as Caleb and another Scout heard the commotion, they headed to the scene by canoe, prepared with a medical kit and were even ready to perform CPR if needed. The river-savvy Scouts were able to help the boaters and emergency services arrived shortly after to take the father and son to the hospital.

We love the beauty of creation all around Happy Camp and our Klamath Neighbors. Sometimes we think that Happy Camp is the best possible place in the world to live. It really shocked us when Dan’s retina specialist down in the city said that he’d never live there. Well, my first thought was that I’d hate to live in the city, even though I grew up in Minneapolis, MN, not a small town at all. But no place is perfect, or perfect for everyone.
It has been mentioned by various voices of the community that Happy Camp has problems. These problems are also found in other places, larger places, with much more in terms of resources than the little town of Happy Camp can offer to solve them.We have a much more important resource, our Klamath Neighbors who can accomplish great things when they work together! While we have only a handful of “homeless” people and families, we also have no homeless shelters or Gospel Missions that offer a bed for the night or a good meal to the hungry. While we have persons with mental health issues, we have inadequate mental health services to provide them with aid, at least within 75 miles and a two hour drive.
A number of years ago burglary increased to about one a night. A Neighborhood Watch was formed, and that eliminated 98% of the problem all along the River, within the first month. When the patrolling and communications were discontinued, however the problems have risen again. We have some people with alcohol and other drug problems who need to finance their addictions and use crime to do so. We greatly appreciate all of the law enforcement agencies in our community, but they aren’t always in our community and the opportunistic element who wants to evade detection when they rob homes or steal gas, knows when they aren’t available.
The Neighborhood Watch is working with law enforcement and the community volunteers to curtail the crime and get help for the perpetrators. They would appreciate your suggestions at the next meeting, March 7th, 2016 at the Karuk Housing Conference Room, and most of all your volunteer time and effort!

Walk into Walmart in Yreka (only 75 miles away!!)and you are greeted with red and white and pink boxes of chocolates and cookies in heart shapes!February is a fun time for celebrations!
Monday the Happy Camp High School students got the day off for Lincoln’s Birthday. Next Monday all the students will have a day off thanks to President’s Day. Good Month for celebrating birthdays, I have a grandson, Gavin James who was just five years old on Thursday and a granddaughter, Makenzi Skye who was five years old on Sunday. It just seems like no time since they were newborn babies, then toddlers and now they are nearly ready to launch into kindergarten already. It is a beautiful thing to see the growth and learning of a child and I love being Grandma, but wish we saw them more often!!
The Happy Camp Grange will be having a Dinner on Sunday from 5 to 7 pm. Besides your choice of tri-tip or chicken, there will also be full meal with salad, baked potatoes, dessert, and even door prizes!! You can pick up tickets for $15 at the Happy Camp Community Service District or Marble Mountain Gifts or call Ruth Bain 493-2989, Laura Mayton 493-2596 or Carol Sharp 493-5215. What a wonderful chance for a great dinner at the Grange and support one of the most important non-profits in our community at the same time.
There will be a Sweetheart Dance on Saturday, the 20th, from 7-10 for 6th through 12th graders at the Karuk “Community Center 64236 with the goal to promoting healthy relationships and peaceful homes.
For one Valentine’s Day I tried to define LOVE. That word we use for so many things, but are so vague about what it means. But in saying that LOVE was not just a feeling of infatuation, the headline on the column ended up being “Love is a Feeling!!” Opposite of what was intended!! Oh well, just goes to prove that Love is hard to describe, especially because we use the same word for loving chocolate, loving our mother, and loving our babies as well as the more romantic love and the commitment of being married fifty years to one spouse.
Ruth Graham was once asked if she ever considered divorce from Evangelist Billy Graham. The Grahams had five children: Virginia (Gigi), Anne, Ruth, Franklin and Nelson Edman (Ned)and Ruth was sole parent at home when Billy Graham was holding evangelistic Crusades across America and the world. She said “No, divorce was never considered, murder perhaps, but not divorce.” They were married about 64 years, “for better and for worse, sickness and in health, as long as they both lived” and united in the ministry.
So the best definition of love that I know of, is found in 1st Corinthians 13:4-8:
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.Love never ends. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
