Farewell wishes for Frank and Clara Prindle

Melissa Culbert made a beautiful cake for a farewell to Frank and Clara Prindle Sunday at the Happy Camp Christen Fellowship. Frank and Clara have been friends of many since they moved here –nearly fifty years ago! I remember when Frank and Terry Everett and Dan used to be deacons at the Happy Camp Bible Church back in early 70’s. We took them to a drop off point to backpack for a vacation trip once.

Their daughter,Faye, shared some of the family plans as they anticipate leaving Happy Camp in a few weeks.

“We moved to Happy Camp in August of 1962 because Frank was hired to teach High School shop,, which he did for ten years. After not teaching for two years he taught fifteen years in the elementary school. Clara first volunteered as a teacher’s aide in the elementary school. She was a paid aide for nine years before going to college and getting her teaching credential. She completed a five year program in four years and graduated with honors. She was able to do her practice teaching here at the elementary school, was then hired and taught elementary school for eight years. Clara suffered a stroke during spring break of her eighth year and was forced into disability retirement well before she was emotionally ready for retirement.

Frank and Clara are moving to Pendleton, Oregon close to May first in order to live near Lynn, there only daughter living in the United States. Pendleton is much drier and therefore without Happy Camp’s beautiful conifer forest. The home that we are in the process of purchasing does have a view of distant tree-covered mountains.

“When they moved here there were four sawmills, some of which were operating two shifts daily. There were more people here then and many more students in both schools.

Three times they were forced to move out of our home for high water. On Dec 22, 1964 the river was 35 inches deep in their home. January 15,1974 they moved out, the water got into the garage, but not the house. On Jan 1, 1997, the water was twenty inches deep in the home. “They had moved into one of our rentals, and when the home was cleaned and ready to move back in, Clara said, “When the next flood comes we will be too old to be able to move out.”
Prindles demolished rental units four and five and hired Tom Day to haul rock slide material from a highway slide below Hokanson’s. Butch Crocker used his big cat to spread and pack the slide material into a raised pad for our new triple wide. Because the state highway dept believed that the center section of the triple wide was too tall to clear the Horse Creek bridge, it was necessary to bring that center section over Greyback. They moved into the new home Dec 6, 1997 and then dismantled their old home.

Frank and Clara will be leaving many friends and memories here in Happy Camp. As they say, “Goodbye” it is with the awareness that we will likely see some of you again here on earth and some of you we will spend eternity with in heaven. God Bless You and, “may the wind be always at your back.”

“We have sold all of our Happy Camp property to Jacob Landmesser, PO Box 404, Happy Camp. Jacob plans to continue to operate the remaining rentals and the orchard. Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce is happy to have Landmesser Apartments and Jacob as new members! If you desire to purchase peaches or other fruit, flowers, or vegetables this coming season, Jacob’s phone number is 774-276-5386.

Springtime JOYS and Youth

Saturday is the Basket weaving conference. The best part is the field trips to find how to locate some of the materials. I chickened out when Verna took us to places with poison oak but many hike far and wide for the materials to make these beautiful baskets that the Karuk people are famous for making. The theme is Vikaraha-Ipit, Itam-Imaan (basketry – yesterday, today, tomorrow) For further information contact Helene Rouvier at 493-1600.

A few students at the High school went to training at Yosemite. Then there were more going to visit colleges like Berkeley as well as others where they may be interested in pursuing their education. Several came back from the last trip interested in small Dominion College. Now that the countdown to graduation is only about 36 school days things get pretty serious. Serious preparation is taking place for the Star testing right now.

Winners in the down river fishing contest have been announced ad you can see the smiling faces of the winners with their catch on the Parry’s bulletin board. Bobby Perez of Happy Camp got first place with 29”. Sharon O’Connor of Sawyer’s bar got second place with a 271/4”, Dee Tolson of Orleans 26 ½ fish won Third and fourth was Ken Ratuihn of Orleans 281/4”, Tammy Markin got a 15: fish from the bank!!

I always love it when Jayne Guiducci helps our as a volunteer in the Chamber office next to the post office. She rolls up the rug and cleans every corner! She is offering Spring Cleaning, spring everyday! While you are doing your spring cleaning it’s a good time to set aside the items that can bring in a few bucks at your big yard sale on June 8-10 when the Hwy 96 long yard sale takes place from Klamath River to Happy Camp and beyond!! Klamath River Community Hall has it on their calendar; do you have it on yours??

Speaking of Calendars, Chamber is planning for the Rockin the Klamath concert in July. The date is goinh to be moved so that it won’t compete with the Bluegrass festival in Scott Valley if possible.

Before that, Saturday May 19th is Armed Forces Day when General Daniel Hokanson will be speaking here!!!Tim G will be letting us know more details for honoring veterans soon.

Karuk Reunion is August 24th, and so is Seiad Day for our neighbors in Seiad Valley. August 30 to September1 is Bigfoot Jamboree. In Happy Camp which is the best hometown festival around! You won’t want to miss being in Happy Camp for the Labor Day weekend as the dances, games, and parade are always fun!
My. it seems to be a busy summer already! And then we will be looking forward to the 2nd Annual Dear Mad’m Day October 12-14th. The fourteenth of October is really Stella Pattersons actual birthday and Stella Patterson was the writer who experienced all the tales everyone enjoys in Dear Mad’m, her memoir!

Adom, my five month old Aussie puppy is growing to beat the band, When we got him in January he was a red furry baby of only 13 lbs and he has reached 40 lbs now!! His zest for living, which includes jumping up on the bed, digging in the mud in the backyard and always being energetic and ready to play are so delightful. Youthful enjoying life and springtime are such fun to watch.

Royal Blue shares interesting poetry on his morning inspirations radio, and lately he has shared some by Sammy Bucher, who is also an artist of Precious Moments fame, such as:
Don’t worry when you’re growing old, if you’re still young at heart.
Put on a happy face each day, this is the time to start!
Just be thankful for the years that you have lived so long,
Just take good care of you, my friend, and nothing will go wrong

It is a blessing to grow older, it is a privilege denied to many!

Sunrise Service Celebrating Resurection

Pastor Kirk Eadie just called to let me know that the traditional Sunrise Service will be held at the Happy Camp Airport on Sunday April 8th at 7:30AM. Dress warmly as it is usually chilly up there at that time of the morning.

this service has been held for many many years, as far back as I can remember, by the Happy Camp Bible church, and the Assembly of God Church in the Meadows, and the Happy Camp Christian Fellowship. Pastor Stan Poeschel, Pastor Bill Estes and Pastor Kirk Eadie all will be taking part in the service and Kirk and Alex Easie will be playing guitar for the music of the service.

Following the Service, everyone is invited to the Assembly of God in the Meadows for biscuits and gravy potluck breakfast. Bake up some of those light and fluffy biscuits for the gathering and join them for a time of fellowship.
In case of rain, the service will be at the Happy Camp Bible Church instead of the Airport outside.

The Horse Creek Community Church will have Sunrise Service at 7 AM at the Bridge on Hwy 96 followed by breakfast at 8, Sunday School at 9’30 and the Regular Service at 11 a,m

A Loyal Friend

No Matter where you are, my friend,
And no matter where you go,
My heart is always with you.
And I want you to know
That you are always in my prayers!
And everything you do
Brings me so much happiness, whenever I’m with you.
You never try to make me angry
and you are there when I am sad.
Because you are the best friend
That I have ever had.
