NOTES FROM ABOVE GROUND

By Honey van Blossom

(Honey is a Belgian Marxist former strip-tease artiste)

A package arrived in the mail with my cousin Little Barbara’s address in the top left hand corner. I found a note inside the book in the package. Little Barbara wrote she and her sister Daina thought I would enjoy reading a book about an eighty-year old woman who begins a new chapter in her life in the mountains of Trinity County (sic: actually Siskiyou County), near where our Aunt Big Barbara taught in Blanchard Flat School in Hoosimbim Mountain during the Great Depression.

I’m approaching seventy, and my cousins approach eighty. This book seemed like it would be just the ticket to a new way to look at growing old.

What reading the book — and then following up with some research — turned out to be was the revelation of a life that vividly soared without a safety net over a ranch in Stockton, literary San Francisco and a remote cabin near Happy Camp in Trinity County. (sic) The author was not an eighty-year old; she was close to ninety when she finished writing it.]
Although Honey was incorrect about Trinity County, Dear Mad’m moved to her cabin near Clear Creek just down river from Happy Camp, CA and was in Siskiyou Mountains of Siskiyou County, California. She seems to have enjoyed the story. Stella moved to the mining claim when she was 80, after a leg injury, and wrote the story, but it went to various publishers and had final editing from the eventual publisher by 1955.
The printing was postponed to 1956 after McCall’s Magazine wanted to include it in serialization that spring.

Suffer Little Children by Pastor Dave

“Then the little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of Heaven’ And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.”

Matthew 19:13-15

Last week Community Bible Church held its annual Vacation Bible Church and we had a great time. It takes a lot of time and help to make Vacation Bible School work, but I am sure those who helped accomplish the program were blessed. I am always grateful for those from our church who help, but there were also helpers from five other churches and another church helped financially.

The Children came. They sang songs, played games, did crafts, listened to mission and Bible stories, and generally had a good time. The young people were great! They came with good attitudes, participated with a good spirit, enjoyed the snacks, and generally were a blessing.

People have asked why we have Vacation Bible School, an AWANA Club, a Christian School, and the Fall Fun Night. The answer is simple: “Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come unto Me.” So, they come, and we tell them about Jesus. In doing so, maybe we get a taste of what Heaven will be like!

By the way, have you ever investigated the evidence concerning who Jesus is? You should!

In Christ,
Pastor Dave

A letter from DearSir was Shared!!

Sharing Dear Mad'm mementos and reminisce as we walk down memory lane...

Sharing Dear Mad’m mementos and reminisce as we walk down memory lane…

One of the very interesting mementos that Karen Benson shared at our last Dear Mad’m get together was to read a letter from Fred H. Crooks, Clear Creek, Siskiyou Co. Calif. written BY HAND at Clear Creek 5/12/57:
“Dear Mrs. Buck;
“Thanks for your nice letter, and I know Mrs. Patterson would have enjoyed it very much, but she passed away Dec. 23, 1955. She saw her book in print and had the fun of spending some of the money. The Norton Co. paid her $1,000.00 in advance royalties, the McCall’s Magazine paid $5,000.00 for the condensation, and the book is being published in England for which the English Co. paid 3,000.00 pounds at $2.87 per. But money didn’t mean much to her.
“The character writing this is known as DearSir in the book. I have tried to answer all the letters and cards that have come for Mrs. Patterson, but there has been hundreds and I am way behind, they have come3 from all over the U.S. and Canada and are still coming.
“Mrs. Patterson would have gotten a big thrill out of all the letters.
I have her dog Vicki she is 15 the 20th of this month.
“I am still mining every winter.
“Thanks again for your nice letter, enclosed is a picture of Mrs. Patterson and her dog Vicki when she was writing her story.
“Best Wishes
“Fred H. Crooks

48th Annual Bigfoot Jamboree will be Classic “camp!”

BigfootJamboree_0486ParadeIdea
How exciting!! The Happy Camp Coordinating Council has announced the theme for this years Bigfoot Jamboree Parade!! Now don’t go thinking that you have all the time in the world to make a float. Put your thinking caps on and come up with a stupendous idea!!

The theme is (da da…drum roll!!) Classic “Camp.”

Create a float that captures a piece of Happy Camp History. Maybe you’ll want to talk about the logging history and the mill or mills of your choice. Maybe you will want to talk about the Karuk Tribal Culture and the rich traditions of the Native American members of the community. Perhaps you want to talk about Mining, the Classic Hill, Siskon, Independence, Chamed or GreyEAgle mine. The original name, Murderer’s Bar, might be your float, the ’64 flood or fire fighting to keep Happy Camp safe. Perhaps you’ll recreate the historical “Camp” places, woodsman bar, the movie theater,, Evans Mercantile, Clear Creek or “the Eddie” swimming holes.

The Parade begins at 11 o’clock on Sumnday August 31st, 2014. We are looking forward to seeing you there, and seeing your entry into the Parade!!

A Marvelous Ordinary Life!

Author unknown, shared by Gregg Bradin

Do not ask your children to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable, but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder,
and the marvel of an ordinary life!
Show them the Joy of tasting, tomatoes, apple and pears.
Show them how to cry when pets and people die.
show them the infinite pleasure in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself!

The Happy Camp Elementary School students are on Summer Vacation!! I missed the Eighth Grade Graduation Wednesday when my brand new ’87 Blazer had to be towed home over a little problem. The Happy Camp High School Students still need to take their Final Exams and finish the work for the year. But this is the last week!! Most of the week will be minimum days so the students study up for the finals, and Friday night at 7 is graduation night for the Senior Class of 2014!!

That should be enough excitement for one week, but there is more going on. The Happy Camp Chamber has had fliers up and down the River to announce the Art & Treasure Klamath River Highway 96 Yard Sale Weekend (June 14th.) Some Yard Sates will begin the day before and some will continue on Sunday, but all will have “treasures” out for sale on Saturday. What a wonderful time for a drive down the beautiful State of Jefferson Scenic Byway and stop at Yard Sales on the way. At the Klamath River Community Hall there will be a Flea Market and Craft Sale. They will also have a Brunch and a BBQ on Sunday and even some Horseshoe Games.

Saturday, Seiad Valley Volunteer Fire Department will be having a big sale and already four or five other sales are happening in the Seiad Valley. Then on to Happy Camp for more sales at various places.

The Scott Valley Bank Chili Cook-Off will take place in the River Park on Saturday as well. Contestants have already signed up to show off their best recipes for chili or salsa. This is a fun time at the Pavilion and the Chili will be made at the park and judged at one o’clock.

There will also be the Lawnmower Races next Saturday and Sunday, in fact, it is the first Race of the season and the first round of the Western Mower World Series Races. Saturday you can sign up at 1 pm for a $20 entry fee and $5 pit pass and Race at 3 p.m. On Sunday 11 o’clock is the sign up and noon is the Race Start. Kid’s Races after Lawnmowers are done. For further information call Deputy Gabe 493-2772.

Sunday is Father’s Day as well. Thanks to all the Father’s who loving care for their children every day of the year!
