The 23rd of December; thought for the Day

by Esther Lombardi
It’s the twenty-third day of December. The Night Before Christmas (“A Visit from St. Nicholas”) was first published in the Sentinel on this day in 1823. We also celebrate Festivas today. It’s also time for the Roman festival, Larentalia. Take a look at the reading selection for today.

What do writers say?

“Somehow, not only for Christmas
But all the long year through,
The joy that you give to others
Is the joy that comes back to you.

“And the more you spend in blessing
The poor and lonely and sad,
The more of your heart’s possessing
Returns to you glad.”
– John Greenleaf Whittier

Snow, Snow, Snow brings cancellations….and New Years Dinner!

The Happy Camp Elementary School Program Thursday was canceled.

Church at Happy Camp Christian Fellowship which meets at the Elementary School Sunday morning is canceled.

The Christmas Eve Community Holiday Dinner is postponed from Monday to next week. The Dinner will become a New Year Dinner! It will be held on New Year’s Day at the Elementary School from noon to 2 pm. Hopefully we will all have dug out from the beautiful blanket of snow covering the community by then.

How much snow did you get at your house? Do you have electricity? According to the last report that I saw, 1,248 are out of power in 95039 area zip code. Someone also said that they had measured 30″ of snow- – – is it possible? That is a lot of snow out there!!

Children Hear Stories of Christmas, but Snow Changes Plans

Holiday Activities continued this week. Tuesday was an opportunity for the little ones to come to the Family Resource Center in their jammies for cocoa and story time with Mrs. Claus. They heard, “T’was the Night Before Christmas…” told by a Teddy Bear with much expression, and his sidekick, mouse.

Mrs. Claus also read a story. Each child went home with a fabulous treat bag of a toy, candy cane and little orange as well as a book of their own.

thank you to the Family Resource Center for this opportunity for the children, and Mrs. Claus too!

The Holiday Program at Happy Camp Elementary School was to be Thursday. This is always a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the little ones presentations. However, due to the snow which was bringing down trees and power-lines, this program was unfortunately canceled. Better to have the families safe at home despite our disappointment in missing the program.

Then Friday when everyone was snowed in yet was to be4 the last day of school this year. 2012

Mrs. S.Claus shared stories with children.

School will resume on January 7, 2013!

Happy Camp High School Celebrates Winter

Wasn’t the snowfall lovely Friday and Saturday!! Didn’t last, but it was so pretty. I was wondering if Abbye Eadie and Cassidy Little singing, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” at the Winter Concert had anything to do with it. They sang beautifully , “Santa Baby” at the beginning, as well as “Dreaming of a White Christmas” concluding Happy Camp High School program.

In between, Denise Beardings Honors English Class presented a skit, “Superfreakiest Elfnam Christmas” which was their own invention. The Drama Class under the direction of Alyssa Garcia who had two presentations. First, the Dance Performance which was good in light, but then, when the lights went out,the glowing trims on black costumes gave a very bright dance. They choreographed the dance as part of their class work. The Drama Class also gave an abridged version of “The Nightmare before Christmas” which they will present in full later.

Our principal, Angelika Brown, welcomed everyone at the beginning and also reminded everyone to enjoy the Art and Industrial Arts displays. The students had done really fantastic work! Silent Auction proceeds to go to the Yearbook so the students will have a book of memories to carry with them after the school year ends.

Proceeds from an earlier lasagne dinner went to the Scholarship Fund for Graduation, June, 2013. Carole Nelson, Vicki Hammon, and Sammy Jo were serving along with students, and Laura Wainwright-Thompson who is teaching Social Studies while Ms. Dorie is away.

Snow & Special Activities for December

December started out with the Community Tree Lighting, Shuttlebugs serving as elves and Santa coming to have a chat with each boy or girl who had come to see him.

Last week, Thursday, was the Happy Camp High School Program and you can read about it on Child & Youth page.

This week was a Family Resource Center opportunity for the little ones to come in their jammies and have hot cocoa while they listened to story time with Mrs. Santa Claus!

Thursday was to be the Happy Camp Elementary School program at the High School but the program had to be canceled for safety. After a day of snow coming down, there were trees down, vehicles in little mishaps from all the snow and electric outages that were to last longer.

Funny how a night of quiet peace, with no sounds but the snow falling, evokes such a time of calm. Instead we stay close to home awaiting the roads to be clear, keep candles or lanterns burning until the electricity comes back on and have no worry and stres of all the things we had intended to accomplish yet before next week!! While some may have missed the last day of school for 2012, perhaps they will enjoy the change in plans yet!

Ready or not, Christmas will arrive Tuesday!
