Carly Hammon & Andrew Bley, Students of the Year

The 09-10 School year has concluded with a really encouraging Award Assembly at the school. There were awards for fun things, some for academics and even the “Students of the Year” presentations.

Denise Bearding announced one of the “Students of the Year,” for the 2009/2010 school year, Carly Hammon. Carly “has an excellent academic record, with a grade-point average above 4.0. She has taken additional courses through College of the Siskiyous and Brigham Young University, and as the top student in her class has achieved the title of Valedictorian. In addition, Carly played all sports, and excelled at them. She participated in our variety shows, helped create yearbooks, wrote for local newspapers, and had artwork in juried gallery shows. She sets high standards for herself and achieves them, while maintaining a strong set of family values. She is an honor to our school, and we congratulate her on this award.”

Dorie Ekman-McDonald announced the other student of the school year, Andrew Bley. Andrew “is an incredible young man who has accomplished great things throughout his high school career, mostly, I believe because he marches to the beat of a Different Drummer. He walks the walk and talks the talk! He is humble and yet dynamic. Some of his accomplishments have been receiving straight A’s for most of his 4 years at Happy Camp High, with the help of only the Internet, Andrew taught himself to play the guitar, with the help of former students, he created a Christian band called “Reign Down.“ Andrew has led Campus Life for 4 years, has guided and inspired other students in their walk and faith as well, is in charge of the whole music ministry at his church in the Meadows and he is the person to call if your computer messes up! With great pleasure and pride, I present the “Student of the Year” award to Andrew Bley. Way to go, Andrew!”

Fabulous Desserts and Music At Seiad for Malloy Barneson Scholarship!

Last Sunday afternoon there was an annual event at the Seiad Valley Elementary School. For only a small admission fee, many people showed up for the Malloy-Barneson Scholarship dessert event.

The desserts were delicious! Fresh strawberries and whipped cream on pound cake, brownies, cakes and more delectable delights than I could hope to describe. Bonnie Barneson said that her Dad’s chocolate cookies were awesome and I must admit she was right. There were also musical talents to listen with a flute solo of Danny Boy and Violin solo accompanied by Susan Crawford on the piano.

It was a delightful evening visiting, and a joy to see Carly Hammon presented with the scholarship as she graduates from Happy Camp High School. Cassidy Hammon was also home from College of the Siskiyous where Carly will join her next year.

Former Happy Camp Guide on Monument Proposal

Siskiyou Crest National Monument Proposal

National Monuments are a land-grab by the federal government and greatly restrict access and use to lands that were designated for “public” use.

Thank you to Tim Grenvik, a Scott Valley resident who used to live in Happy Camp, for bringing his concern with his short comment:

I’ve been hearing snippets off and on for some time now regarding this move, but nothing official. Having seen how establishment of the Smith River system as a “national recreation area” drastically changed what I can, and can no longer do over there, has me worried about the Siskiyou Crest proposal. I’ve enjoyed many years of various ”outdoor activities” in the Siskiyou’s and have grave concerns should it be defined as a “national monument”. I can say with some certainty, you would no longer be able to enjoy that country the way you used to. If you stop to take a moment and reflect on the many changes you’ve personally witnessed over the years, the many activities you can no longer enjoy on public lands, then you may see there has been a shift in policy that denies you your right to enjoy the outdoors. This proposal, should it be enacted, would be the final straw on a huge expanse of land in our back yard that is already partially denied to us. Just think LSR’s (spotted owls), wilderness expansion, road removal, stream course protection, and gates on public land – all deny us access or use in the name of “management”.

I have always asked but one question — ‘MANAGEMENT FOR WHO?’
