Klamath views: ‘Happy Camp’s Got Talent!’

Judy Bushy
Happy Camp, Calif. —

It’s been so lovely along the Klamath River for the past couple of weeks. Summer has finally arrived and the warm summer days are wonderful.

Last Wednesday the Happy Camp Community Computer Center had new computers and monitors installed! What a delight! Everything is faster and so efficient. The new towers have a slot for the memory card of cameras, so we don’t have to borrow the card reader any longer. The computers are also connected to three possible printers, an HP laser jet with black ink (for $.10 a page), an HP Laser Jet with color printing (for $.50 a page) and an Artisan for photos and can be done on photo paper, which are $1 a page.

The computer center is a nice quiet place to work and check e-mails, write things, browse the Internet or check out Google Earth! It is nice to have a staff of very knowledgeable computer experts on hand to answer questions when you get stumped on how to do things or how a certain problem could be solved. Emma Lee Johnson, Randy White and Kelly Worchester and Eric Paulare on hand to help you. They also can solve the problem you are having on your home computer for a reasonable fee. They are open to the public from 1-5:30 p.m. most days except Sunday.

Bob and Vicki Schmalzbach have moved back to Happy Camp to their home on Druery Road. Kevin Anderson also came up from Antelope. They’d left Happy Camp over five years ago, but have stayed in contact and it is great to see them back. We did run into Vicki and Kevin at Hometown Buffet on Antelope Avenue when we were down in Sacramento for doctor checkups for Dan a couple of years ago. It will be so much nicer to see them here right back home!

JavaBob was in on the start of the Fire Safe Council and was the president of the Chamber of Commerce just before they left. There was a gathering of friends for a barbecue Sunday afternoon at the Klamath River Resort Inn to enjoy catching up on news and hearing a few of Bob’s Bigfoot tales.

My husband, Dan, spent a couple of hours last night watering the garden of a neighbor who is on a vacation trip. It is a job that brings him much pleasure, as he brings home the Swiss chard and other greens, cauliflower and strawberries! That’s the fun part of the job. He was also watering. He came home and took a shower and by then, the pleasant summer shower had begun. Oh well. At least he was conscientious in his care of the garden!

Happy Camp Has Talent is coming!!

Driving downriver this morning there were some sprinkles and it was cool and cloudy. Not too cool, but it was pleasant driving and enjoying the greens of the forest and the river as it changes in its journey to the Pacific. When we stopped by the Salmon River Outpost in Somes Bar, it was neat to see the note cards of Dean Davis and photos of the area. They have such a nice bunch of books by local authors and local topics. Chris, of the Salmon River Outpost, is a sponsor of the Rocking the Klamath Summer Concert at the Happy Camp River Park July 16. The Klamath River Resort Inn, Forest Lodge and River Connection are already sponsors also. Isn’t it amazing the neighborly cooperation along the Klamath River Community? We may be a distance from each other, but then, it is such a nice scenic drive!

The Spiral Kings, who are playing for the concert, are a four piece rock and blues band out of Southern Oregon. Phil Cox is on guitar and vocals, Jason Fries is on guitar and vocals, Mike Varley is on bass and vocals and Norm Goodnough is on drums and backup vocals.

Before the band there will be an opportunity for our talented Klamath neighbors to “show and share” what they can do! The Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce is going to have a community talent show and share named Happy Camp Has Talent – a show of our amazing and talented performers! The crowd will choose the winner and the Chamber will award one $100 prize. So get out your guitar or instrument, tune up the vocal cords and practice your song or other performance and plan to make your debut.

I’d hoped to report on the Happy Seniors recent Big Buck Bingo and what future things they are planning, but the deadline is moving earlier with the Monday holiday for Fourth of July! So further news will have to wait until next week. Have a good time with family and friends celebrating America’s birthday this weekend. Stay safe and happy!

2012 Bigfoot Jamboree!!

It is coming!!

Bigfoot Jamboree is August 31 – September 2nd.

The Happy Camp Coordinating Council has been busy and are planning this years event. Mark your calender and out on your thinking cap. How will you participate this year. Will you be working in a booth to support your favorite organization? Will you have a beautiful float in the parade? Time to think ahead!

Silver Anniversary HC Chamber of Commerce

It was a very hot evening in July, 1986. The sound of Elk Creek rushing over rocks and pebbles was the background noise. A congenial group of Happy Camp citizens gathered at the Elk Creek Campground at the end of the day. Jim and Carol Jones hosted the business leaders of the Happy Camp community.

They were concerned about the promotion of the businesses of the little community on Highway 96 along the Klamath River. They wanted to advertise, but advertising took more than each business alone could pay. Therefore the idea had been proposed to cooperate together and pool their funds to make the best advertising that would promote Happy Camp. It was decided that each business could put $50 in the kitty to pay for advertising, perhaps a billboard out on Interstate 5 that would bring visitors down Highway 96 to Happy Camp.

Who was at that meeting?

Ben Rosser was the owner of Forest Lodge Motel.

Charlotte was owner of Evans Mercantile started by the Evans family. Guy and Ora Head ran the store until Guy was killed in a train collision and Ora had continued with son.

Adamsons owned Larry’s Market

Jean

It was a small group.  But they were the entrepreneurs and business circle of Happy Camp.

1998-2002

2003-2007 Crusin’ the Klamath, with numbers of beautiful antique cars came down the Klamath River for the Show and Shine!

2006  This was the year that celebrated TWENTY YEARS of the  HC CofC and 150 years of town of Happy Camp!  John Gould chaired the committee for another very successful Rollin on th River. The Chamber gave the Happy Camp Community Services District our annual contribution to upgrade the River Park, this year $3,000.

At the first meeting April 4, 2007 Chris Sorenson was president. The previous treasurer, rosemary Boren,  had handed over the books, and there was $9,672-93 in the Chamber bank account besides the Chamber trailer that was used as office at events such as Rollin’ on the River Bike Rally and held archived records. Instead of the regular weekly Wednesday lunch meetings that the Chamber had held for decades, besides the monthly first Tuesday evening meeting, the new chamber officals decided to correspond by emails. Members of the Board were Chris Sorenson, Roberta Arneson Rita Manley, Lehel Garami (Treasurer) Roberta Collum, Montine Blevins and Jon Grunbaum. Four signs were place in Oregon on Waldo Road for $1,200.

Although there are no minutes for elections in 2008 or 2009, the minutes for July 20, 200- show Ian Tripp as President, Dinah Sulipenck as vice president, Carly Manley as treasurer and Rita King and Lisa West as co-secretarys with Charles Brown, Dave Wrobleski, Michelle Wrobleski, high school student Majestah West and Victoria Pope as board members. Later letterhead shows Dinah as president, Carly Manley as Vice President, Rita King as Secretary, Victoria Pope, Dave and Michelle, Charlie Mayton, Jody Jewell and Laurie Bowers as board members.

-December 11,2010 Dinah Sulipeck called the meeting to order, and there was discussion for a couple of hours on qualifications for members of the Chamber of Commerce. Roger Mooberry, Charles Mayten, Jody Jewel, and Rita Manley King resigned from the board leaving only Dinah Sulipeck, President and James Buchner, treasurer as directors. A meeting was held to restore the board to the seven members and Cathleen Searle was appointed as treasurer, Kirk Eadie, Montine Blevins, Pete Winslow and Terri Winslow were the new board members. Dinah did a great job on the Community Tree Lighting event which had been held by Family Resource Center last year, but was previously put on as the Chamber’s gift to the town for at least twenty years.

March 2011-elections, Cathleen Searle as president at a big free spaghetti dinner at the Grange.

Good wishes as Ruth Bain Retires!

John & Ruth Bain

John & Ruth Bain

Ruth Bain started to work at Happy Camp High School February 1978 and had experience as an attendance clerk and aide before beginning her position as secretary. Now, after 34 years in the High School she has decided to retire and visit more with family and grandchildren, which are her delight, and do gardening and handiwork at which she excels.

Happy Camp High School teachers and staff, past and present as well as representatives from the Siskiyou Union High School District gathered at the Happy Camp Grange for a farewell. Retired teachers such as Paul Trestrail, Terry & Roberta Everett, Hokinson represented by Diann and John Kufner were also there and spoke to the value of Ruth’s efforts in the school over the 34 years she faithfully and loyally kept the office. Bob Seaman shared how vital to the operation of the Happy Camp Grange Ruth has been also. Angelika Brown, new high school principal this year, presented Ruth with a beautiful crystal award.

Ruth has been recognized for her work in the community in the past. In May, 1995 Ruth received a commendation from the AMERICAN Legion and Auxiliary, given in recognition of outstanding volunteerism in our community and country. It included the note, ”Ruth you have our gratitude an sincere appreciation for donating priceless help to those in need. River Girl has recently been published! It is so exciting to have a brand new book published by Linda Jo Martin of Happy Camp.

Linda writes novels in her spare time and this is for young girls and teens. It is a story of a young girl who comes to Happy Camp in the 1920’s. Although it is fiction, Linda takes her historical research very seriously!

It is most of all a very good story and I enjoyed it very much. It’s a lovely way for a young girl to enjoy a quiet summer afternoon reading!

It is available on Amazon, but you can stop in at Marble Mountain Gift Company and get a copy or at the Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce office weekdays. For further information on the book or the author see http://rivergirlclaire.com/.
