High School Beautification In Action!

High School Beautification

Judy Bushy

The High School grounds look fabulous this year at the end of school! Mrs. Bearding looks on as students plant flowers around the school to improve the view!

For the past few years, the school has been through repeated remodel and repair. This is the first time it has been back to “normal” and with Mr. Eadie trimming the grass and the students planting flowers, it is really looking good!! Here are some of the students, Christian Robinson, Emily Parry, Ciera Silva, Bailey helping improve the loos of the school.

Thanks to all who contributed to the improved look of Happy Camp High School!

Teen Chef of the Year

Seven aspiring chefs with a love and passion for food put their kitchen skills to the test as they competed for tuition scholarships at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California, a college of Argosy University, San Francisco.

In the end, there could only be one winner — Taylor Markin, a senior at Happy Camp High School in Siskiyou County at the top of California took the title of The Art Institute of California, San Francisco Best Teen Chef 2012.

During the April 21 cook-off competition, the competitors were asked to showcase their talent and skill by preparing and serving a two-course meal in just two hours.

The meal consisted of a Sautéed Breast of Chicken with Creative Garnish, Rice Pilaf and Broccoli Sauté. Competitors were judged on technical skills, including knife skills, safety, sanitation, organization, cooking techniques and cleanup, and five specific qualities of the finished dishes: temperature, taste, texture, portion size and presentation.

In addition to the title, Markin will be awarded a $4,000 tuition scholarship toward a culinary degree program at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California, San Francisco.

Markin says her family and friends are very supportive and are excited for her. She gives particular credit to her mother.

”My mom taught me to cook and she is my greatest inspiration,” said Markin.

Chef Mark Davis, academic director of the culinary
department at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California, San Francisco, said Markin was the clear winner.

”We were very impressed by all the high school seniors who competed … this year; their passion and enthusiasm for the culinary arts is inspiring,” said Davis. “But Taylor really stood out with a stellar performance.”

What’s for Birthday, Cat?

jbushy
Do you ever wonder what to get for someone special for their birthday??
Cat Haskell is very fortunate! Her sister and a friend gave her a wonderful birthday present recently. It is lovely!

They painted a beautiful moonlit mural on her home. It is the perfect setting to sit among the trees in the quiet evening and enjoy the scene of the moon over the river!

Happy Birthday Cat!

Suggestions for Ecomonic Plan

Happy Campers received an invitation to a meeting by the Karuk Tribe for input on an economic development plan for our local area. We applaud the Karuk Tribal leadership for taking seriously the importance of economic vitality of this area and look forward to that meeting. In the meantime, a Happy Camper has suggestions…..

Dear Sirs

In response to your letter concerning the public meeting to develop a 5 to 10 year economic development plan.

A 5 to 10 year economic plan is a laudable project.

The things that can be produced from the 1.2 million acres of Karuk Ancestral Territory are mining, farming, logging and tourism.

On mining the Karuk Tribe needs to pressure the California legislature to end the moratorium on gold dredging which will bring back the gold tourism activity. This would have an immediate economic benefit to the community.

Tourism includes hunting, fishing and camping. The Karuk Tribe needs to set up a fish hatchery and begin stocking the Klamath River and its tributaries with fish species that can be caught and kept. This can provide jobs for community members running the hatchery and delivering the fish as well as boosting fishing tourism.

The Karuk Tribe needs to take over management of the forest and resume logging to clear land so as to increase the grazing for deer and elk. This will produce larger herds and increase hunting tourism. Before 1850 the Karuk Tribe managed the tree density by burning portions of the forest to create feed for the deer and elk.

The Karuk Trbe needs to build a saw mill to take the logs cut by community members and turn them into lumber that can be sold to produce income for the community members.

The Karuk Tribe needs to encourage local farming of organic vegetables and grains so that local people can buy locally grown foods that are more nutritious than the stuff available from the super markets.

There may be other possibilities but these are the obvious ones.

Sincerely
Pete McLaughlin
