Deputy Melum Gives Tobacco Talk to Teens

Dennis mellum, former DARE officer, speaks at HCHS

Dennis Mellum, better known in these parts for his previous duties as Deputy DARE, was back in school Monday. His talk to the Happy Camp High School Students wasn’t about drugs or alcohol. He shared the results of tobacco use. Dennis has successfully recovered from a battle with mouth and neck cancer. He underwent horrendous radiation and chemo experience and is now able to talk on these matters to young people.

It brought back memories of our months at UCDavis when my husband underwent similar treatments. The experience of hearing the doctors tell you that he isn’t going to be around long (and the threat that it’s an awful way to die) are bad news. The happy news, in both cases, Dan and Dennis, is that they have survived the cancer!

Dennis closed with a quote of Will Rogers, who s said, “If I’d known I was going to live so long, I’d have taken better care of my body!” Hopefully those who use tobacco will decide it isn’t worth the risks.

What’s Happening along the Klamath this weekend

Saturday is a big day along the beautiful wild Klamath River. The Seiad Valley Volunteer Fire Department is having their hugely popular rummage sale. You would not believe the bargains and extraordinary finds that have been located at this special rummage sale. Not only can you find something you need and have always wished you could find, but the funds raised go toward keeping this group of Volunteers ready to protect homes along the River from fire. Yard Sale entripreneurs from last weeks Art & Treasure Sales in Happy Camp are welcome to donate their unsold merchandise to the Seiad Valley Firefighters! This is a valuable service and we are glad to support the Firefighters with donations of things for the rummage sale and coming to the sale as shoppers also.

Does anyone know a Lisa Lane? She married Aug 26, 1990, birth notice for Cameron was Santa Rosa. Some photos and family albums got lost in Siskiyou County and we’d like her to contact Happy Camp News at jbushy @happycampnews.com. Thank you!

In Happy Camp the children will be at the 11th Annual Kids’ Fair sponsored by the Happy Camp Family Resource Center. The Resource Center gets help from numerous community and county agencies, organizations and businesses which makes for a wide variety of activities going on at the Park. This Saturday from 11 to 1 PM are the times at Happy Camp River Park. All kids and their families are welcome. You can stop by the old go kart track and see what activities the Outdoor Club has going Saturday also!

Have you read the article on our new Happy Camp History page which gives more background on Stella Patterson, better known in these parts as “Dear Madam?”

A Weekend to Treasure!

Art & Treasure Weekend was great in Happy Camp! The showers of early morning didn’t last long and the sun came out for a perfect day for the town wide open market with Yard Sales, Garage Sales, Rummage Sales and Flea Markets and even the Grand Openiing of Marble Mountain Gift Co. on Davis Road.

Visitors came to Happy “Camp from Redding, Yreka, Scott Valley, and from Oregon also,Central Point, Ashland, Medford, Grants pass, Cave Junction, and the coast! Nearly all exclaimed about the beautiful drive on Highway 96 they had enjoyed. Some were here for the first time and some were returning to places that they had fond memories from years past.

The Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce booth at Bigfoot Corner on Hwy 97 and Davis Road was especially busy handing out maps of the places to find the best sales, crafts and artwork. The Siskiyou-Klamath Art Gallery is at that corner and allowed visitors a good view of work by Alan Crockett and other talented artists. Cathleen Searle, the president of the Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce said that they had spread the word “all over the State of Jefferson” and were pleased with the response. Cathleen had made a large three sides display celebrating the activities the Chamber is involved with during this 25th anniversary, members, and photos of past presidents.

The response was wonderful and they had so much fun visiting with all the friendly & enthusiastic visitors that the Happy Camp Chamber is tentatively scheduling a bigger and better Town Wide Ar & Treasure Sale for June 8–10 next year with more sales, more food, more arts & crafts and more fun for everyone!
