First Time Plans to Celebrate “Dear Mad’m”

Dear Mad’m Day August 13th, 2011

View from the former Dear Mad’m Cabin site of the Klamath River’s new placement from 2011,

Happy Camp is celebrating a literary celebrity of our community. The book Dear Mad’m by Stella W. Patterson has brought many visitors to our community and encouraged many “senior citizens” to lead an adventurous life despite advancing years.

The Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce is planning the luncheon picnic to honor Stella Patterson and those who still maintain the spirit she exemplifies today! The Luncheon will be held in the shade of the trees on the lawn of the Klamath River Resort Inn and Rafting Lodge on the Klamath River east of Happy Camp.

Dear Mad’m Day will be Saturday, August 13th and the picnic luncheon for $5 donation will be at 11:00 o”clock. Sandwiches, ribs, jewel and fruit salads and specialty breads are planned, as well as Dolly’s Strawberry Lemonade and dessert.

We are so pleased that guests who have known Dear Mad’m from their time on the River, will be with us. Peter and Liz Lismer who are related to Stella Patterson and who are writing a book to be published by Naturegraph on her life plan to come, Hazel Davis Gendron, our local historian,  who used her artistic talents for a drawing of Dear Mad’m will bring the portrait with her and numerous other “Friends of “Stella” from near and far will be coming to the picnic luncheon.

Plan to come to this first celebration of a literary treasure of the Klamath, Dear Mad’m!

Home Country by Slim Randles

Things were going kinda slow down at the Fly Tying Love Center and it bothered Marvin Pincus a lot.
He found it hard to believe that, out of all the people in the valley, none of them needed love advice and the proper type of fishing fly to illustrate it. He had the sign made and put in the yard, and he’d obviously had great results with the Jones kid and good ol’ Dewey. Since Marvin’s advice to Dewey to shower before asking a girl for a date, Dewey Decker, the Fertilizer King, had had several dates with nice young women.
Now the fishing-fly earrings part of the business was going great. Women all over town were wearing dingle-dangle earrings with Marvin’s point-clipped fishing flies hanging therefrom. He learned that short ladies tended to go for the smaller dries, like Griffith’s Gnats and Royal Coachmen, and the taller ladies leaned toward salmon streamers. Some of the ladies slipped Marvin’s wife, Marjorie, a couple of bucks to help buy more feathers and hooks.
But on the love advice front, there was a dearth of heartbroken customers.
“What would you think,” Marvin said, “if I ran an ad in the Valley Weekly Miracle?”
“For what?” Marjorie said at breakfast.
“You know … love advice.”
“Well, you have the sign out front. I think everyone in the valley already knows about it.”
“But they’re not coming in.”
Marjorie smiled. “Honey, some people find it hard to talk to others about their personal problems. That’s probably it.”
Marvin got a piece of paper and began writing. Then he’d scratch it out and start again. This went on through both bacon and toast.
“How’s it coming, Honey?”
“About got it right, I think, Marge.”
“May I see it?”
He handed it to her.
The best love advice in the valley, tied up with the appropriate fishing fly. Call the Fly Tying Love Center for an appointment. Results guaranteed.
“What do you think?”
Marjorie just smiled and nodded her head. What she thought, however, was that retirement isn’t for sissies.

Kids Fair at the River park

2011 Kids Fair at River Park

The Happy Camp River Park was the scene of the 11th Annual Kids’ Fair Saturday!

Even though the day was overcast, the kids still enjoyed sliding down the waterslide with a big splash at landing! There were lots of fun and games and good things to eat. The food was not only yummy but also (mostly) good for you—like fruit and such!!

There was a cookbook for kids available, but first a sample of graham crackers with cream cheese and fresh sliced strawberries on them! Yummy!

Carol, Kyle and Cliff were grilling the hotdogs, to go with a delicious looking bowl for cut up fruit. There was a video playing with Sesame Street Characters discussing healthy habits!

Melissa Culbert was doing fabulous designs for the face painting.

Crafting cute little pantyhose people with soil and grass-seed inside was Jayne’s table. I’d like to see them when the grass grows out as I imagine they look like a little green Bigfoot. Other places were gluing and pasting things on other kinds of craft items.

First Five was making sure every child went home with a book.
The Volunteer Fire, Ambulance and several Forest Service representatives were there with treats for the kids as well as a chance to play doctor or firefighter! The Ambulance workers gave out a bag with stickers and games which looked like great fun and provided a place to keep other treasures that the kids collected. The Forest Service had balloons filled with helium for the kids too!
