Happy Camp New Year Begins in World of White
Happy Camp High School in Snow
Just in case some of the students are feeling very lonesome due to the extended time away from the halls of their school, here is a photo of Happy Camp High School.
Winter break began a day early with snow causing the Elementary School Program Thursday December 20th and the last day of school Friday, December 21 to be canceled. After more snow in the following days, some areas of Happy Camp reported three feet of heavy wet snow. this caused tree limbs, and even large trees to fall, power lines down, and loss of electricity for various times, some over a week.

Happy Camp Snowstorm Loses Electricity a week!
Thanks Debbie Hixon family of Klamath River who helped so greatly, food and wood and other ways to help and support out community during the recent snow deluge and electrical outages for over a week in some places.
Winter weather always has the potential to knock out power. If an outage occurs, Pacific Powers crews are ready to go to work to get the lights on –Recent events brought a new level of awareness to many — that being prepared is not so much a crazy survivalist notion as a common-sense necessity.
Have an emergency kit on hand, and build lists or social networks to communicate with family and important contacts. Start by discussing together what could happen and what you should do at home, at school or at work if an emergency happens. To be prepared, make a list of what needs to be done ahead of time. Store important family documents, such as birth certificates, passports, wills, financial documents, insurance policies, etc. in waterproof container(s). Identify an appropriate out-of-town contact that can act as a central point of contact in an emergency Write down and exercise your plan with the entire family at least once a year. Make sure everybody has a copy and keeps it close at hand.
If your power goes out, check your circuit breakers or fuse box first to make sure the problem is not inside your home. If not, then call Pacufuc Power at 1-877-508-5088 – the automated system will give you the cause of the outage if it’s known, and an estimated time when power will be restored.
You may have some of the items already, for an emergency kit on hand, such as a flashlight, battery-operated radio, food, and water. The key is to make sure they are organized and easy to find. Would you be able to find your flashlight in the dark? Make sure your kit is easy to carry. Keep it in a backpack, duffel bag or suitcase with wheels, in an easy-to-reach, accessible place, such as your front hall closet. Make sure everyone in the household knows where the emergency kit is.
Don’t forget to have water on hand – at least two liters of water per person per day. Include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order Have on hand food that won’t spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food and water once a year) If the food is canned don’t forget a manual can opener You’ll also need a wind-up or battery-powered flashlight and wind-up or battery-powered radio with extra batteries for each. First aid kit is always good to have on hand, and especially valuable in an emergency. Some Special items such as prescription medications, infant formula and equipment for people with disabilities will be needed depending on the needs of your family. Extra keys to your car and house as well as cash in smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travellers cheques are also useful) and change for payphones may be needed. A copy of your emergency plan and contact information should be on hand. You may want to ensure you have a land-line and corded phone in your home, as most cordless phones will not work during a power outage.
Other things to have for emergency use are candles and matches or lighter (Do not leave candles unattended. Place candles in sturdy containers and put them out before going to sleep) A change of clothing and footwear for each household member as well as a sleeping bag or warm blanket for each household member. A whistle would be handy in case you need to attract attention. Garbage bags for personal sanitation toilet paper and other personal care supplies. Basic tools (hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, fasteners, safety gloves should be easily accessible. A small fuel-driven stove and fuel which you should know how to use and store properly.
If the emergency goes longer, you may need two extra liters of water per person per day for cooking and cleaning. A whistle to signal for help. If you’re in the dark for long and have to keep the kids from fighting, this could also serve as your referee whistle. Plastic sheeting along with duct tape and a dust mask may be handy.. Personal sanitation items like wet wipes or moist toilette’s, garbage bags, plastic ties, and toilet paper. A wrench or pliers for turning off utilities. Maps of your city or local area. Don’t forget to think about your pets (more water as well as food for them), people with special dietary needs and anyone requiring medication such as insulin. Make sure you have supplies handy.
Of course you may have items particular to your own situation. During the recent snowstorm when electricity was out, some people who get water from pumps had no water. Fortunately there was plenty of good clean snow to melt if they had a way to heat if up. Others didn’t have to rely on snow as the water system kept them in water, but if the water heater was electric, a shower was a mighty chilly experience!
Communication is vital in an emergency. In the recent snowstorm, some people were within a block of the warming station set up at the Karuk Council Building, but they couldn’t get the car out of the drive, let alone off the Hillside Road that hadn’t been plowed and had no idea that they were so close to help. They called CalTrans, but Hillside is under County Jurisdiction so they got no help that way. Who to call, what agendcy might be setting up emergency shelter, meals and housing? Messages left at the Family Resource Center were answered later and they kept the warning station open. Do you need a way to charge your cell phone? Perhaps a car charger? Do you want or need computer backup so you can communicate with e-mails or get updates on weather or warnings? What else would you personally find helpful to have in an emergency or for keeping your family comfortable for the duration of an electrical outage?
The key to surviving any crisis is planning and your emergency plan is important for his reason. It is said that 9 out of ten times when an emergency occurs, the majority of people either freeze (as in take no action as they are in shock) or panic and neither is a good response to an emergency. Those that have an emergency plan are well on their way to surviving in an emergency situation, as they don’t have to waste time trying to figure out where everything is that they will need to keep their family taken care of during the incident.

Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce December 29, 2012
Dolly called the meeting to order at 1:15 pm on December 29, 2012.
Those present were Dolly Elston, James Buchner, Ron & Rosemary Boren and Judy Bushy. There was a quorum with four board members.
Judy read the previous minutes from October. James made motion that we accept the minutes as read, Rosemary 2nd the motion and it passed unanimously.
There was no Treasurer Report but the phone bill had been questioned in the October minutes. The unusual amount was a figure added for late payment. Karen Tulledo gifted the chamber with a phone card to call back to answer calls on the answering machine. It was suggested we look into a Magic Jack. In order to save on the electric bill it was suggested that we make a list of things to turn off before leaving the office, particularly the heater or air conditioner.
Committee Report on Rocking the Klamath. June 29th is the date and we need to pay to reserve the River Park for that day. James will invite the Spiral Kings and opening band. It suggested that the Chamber members be able to offer food booths for the normal charge for a booth, only members.
Dear Mad’m Days was held in October. Next year will be October 11-13. There was discussion on Organization to do Pancake breakfast and agreement beforehand. James made a motion that the Dear Mad’m Committee make decision on the Adopt a Highway program/signs, Rosemary 2nd it and the vote was unanimous in favor of the motion. It was suggested we ask Norma Seaman and Linda Mutz if they would consider helping.
Community Tree Lighting was held in December. The lights were not overly profuse and had not been improved last year. There was a suggestions we have a Christmas Tree at the office next year.
We have Cycle Friendly Stickers available for a $1 donation but they sent them before letting us know that a donation was required.
Membership for 2013 was discussed. Judy made a motion that we raise the Annual Membership Dues to $100, except for home businesses, nonprofits and retired individuals who would remain at $50, and prepare to send out renewals within the next few weeks. James seconded it and the vote was unanimous in favor of the motion.
We appreciate Linda’s help on the Web pages. James made a motion that we renew happyampchamber.com, happycampchamber.org, Dear Mad’m and abandon Rollin on the River, and redirect them to happycampchamber.org. The codes and passwords for them will be kept in the Chamber office, Dolly 2nd the motions and the vote was unanimously in favor.
Facebook posts will continue to be made frequently with notices of things happening in the community and photos. Siskiyou Chamber Alliance is having a calendar of activities but must say what town the activity takes place.
New business: Javabob received a notice from Jefferson Backroads where 8 chamber members can contribute ads to a page for which the Chamber would pay $175 a month for three months Each individual ad would cost $25 so the Chamber would make a little on it. Since we didn’t think we had eight members willing to pay $75 we declined this opportunity at the present time.
James made a motion that we pay Sportsman’s Expo $112.50 for March event. Dolly 2nd and the vote unanimously approved it. We will need volunteers to sit at the booth in March on Saturday to help Judy and on Sunday to help Rosemary.
The Annual Report will include the Sportsman’s’ Expo, Art & Treasure Hunt, Rockin the Klamath, Dear Mad’m , Community Tree Lighting, Facebook and Web pages, volunteers, especially youth, and consignment in office, Troop packages, etc. it was decided that each board member would write about an event or accomplishment and e-mail it to Judy this week to be compiled to the Annual Report.
Rosemary made a motion that the next meeting will be Tuesday, February 5th at the office at 6 pm and the Tuesday, March 5th Annual Meeting will also be at the office at 6 with coffee and desserts. James 2nd the motion and the vote was unanimous in favor of the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
Afterwards, we had forgotten to discuss ad in the Yearbook for Happy Camp High School. Cheyenne Moore wrote us a letter requesting we support the Yearbook with an ad. This year they are trying to make things simple with a business card size ad for $40 per business.

In these few peaceful moments we have together on Facebook right now, may I share with you a few of my Christmas thoughts on this Christmas Sunday morning?
First of all, consider going to church today. It’s where you meet Jesus.
I am struck this Christmas with the overwhelming notion that each of our lives – no matter who we are, what we’ve done and how we’ve lived our lives – are perfectly woven into the full story from before time even began.
For time didn’t begin until there was our earth spinning around our sun in this small microcosm of our universe.
But an omniscient God knew every detail of your life and my life, down to this moment when we virtually sit down together on Facebook, long before He molded our earth into a ball and set it in motion with our little system we have here in our world.
God interweaves and reshapes our personal indiscretions, short-comings, successes and glories according to His mercy and grace into His purpose and His big story. a story He began long before stories began.
And that is what Christmas is about.
Christmas is that radical moment in time when God sent His Son Jesus to be born in our little microcosm because He wanted us to be able to touch, feel, experience and know God in a most human perspective.
Christmas is when God reaches down through space and time to communicate personally with you and me to let us know emphatically that He is alive and He loves us.
God had to do that by sending a human. The bridge of thought to get us finite humans to comprehend an infinite God is such a massive leap of thought we humans couldn’t understand it.
God had to send a human, through a virgin impregnated by God Himself, breaking all time, space and physical barriers to be born in Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago. We needed to touch Jesus and know He is alive. We needed to know Jesus, so we could know God.
My friend, we are coming to a time in our small little microcosm world when we need to meet and know God more than ever before. My sense is we are reading many verses in Revelation and other Biblical prophecies happen before our eyes around the globe.
We need to meet and know Jesus this Christmas.
I need to meet and know Jesus this Christmas all over again..
If you have never met my friend Jesus before, may I introduce Him?
He has the power to reach inside your world today – this Christmas – and be born all over again just for you right here and now. That’s correct, you don’t have to travel to Bethlehem this Christmas to meet Jesus. God is sending Bethlehem right to you, right where you are, right now.
There is an explainable power that happens when a person in the finite world in which we exist reaches out his or her hand to grasp the hand of God. The almighty, omniscient, infinite God has His hand reaching down right now at Christmas waiting for you to take hold of it. You connect hands with God when you meet His Son Jesus.
Jesus arrived on Christmas to be the bridge – the human connection – between us humans and God Himself.
Meeting Jesus is simple. It is something I did and it forever changed my life. It is acknowledging that you, like me, are a sinner and are not even remotely perfect enough to have a relationship with a perfect, holy God. When Jesus came to earth on Christmas, was crucified and died on Good Friday and resurrected on Easter Sunday, that physical act paid the price for any and all punishment for your bad, wrongful acts. All you have to do is accept Jesus as your Savior – the one who bridges the gap between you and God. It’s so simple, yet so profound.
When you do this you break through the barrier of space and time and grab a hold of God’s hand Himself.
Do you need to grasp the hand of God this Christmas? Is that why God allowed you and I to virtually connect on Facebook today in this peaceful Christmas moment we have together?
If you want to meet Jesus you can pray with me this prayer, “God, I admit I am a sinner and there is nothing I can do to be good enough to have a relationship with You. Please forgive me of my sins. I accept Jesus Christ, who was born on Christmas in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago, as my personal Savior to pay the price and punishment for everything I have done wrong so I can have a relationship with You. Thank you for making me Your child this Christmas. I accept your Christmas gift for me personally.”
If you prayed that prayer with me, you should tell someone. Consider going to church today and sharing your prayer with someone there. God is meeting you right where you are today to take care of your most intimate, personal needs.
