Neighborhood Watch Meeting

A

Leaders in the Neighborhood Watch: Randy White, Lisa Scott, Becky Tiraterra, Doreen Mitchell and Deputy David Nye welcome volunteers to help keep the Klamath River Neighborhood free from crime!

After a busy weekend. Monday was the Neighborhood Watch scheduled meeting. Last month the Neighborhood Watch started to advance in organizing the group. . Lisa Scott agreed to serve as President of the Neighborhood Watch and we greatly appreciate her willingness to volunteer and help! She will be joined by Randy White who is working in security areas for the Karuk Housing to be the vice president and we appreciate Randy being willing to share his professional acumen with us. Becky Tiraterra has the major concern for the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). Doreen Mitchell will serve as Secretary/Treasurer and liason with Karen Derry of the Happy Camp Famiy Resource Center. Deputy David Nye has served as Deputy Dare and also helped the community to get the Neighborhood Watch off the ground.

Since our busy training session on a hot weekend in the summer, there has been continued interest in having more training for the CERT. A CPR Class is in the planning stages so if you are interested, the more people in the community that are prepared for such an emergency the safer our Klamath neighbors, and our own families are. It was also decided to have a Saturday training session on Patol and that will be coming up soon so be sure to sign up.

Please consider whether you can become involved in some small way or large in the work of helping your friends and neighbors in the Neighborhood Watch.

There have been things that need keeping an eye on, such as the disappearance of the Cemetery Flag, that need watching.

Your help with Remembrances Appreciated!!!

There were many opportunities for fun, great food and walking down Memory Lane fabout what things were like in the forties and fifties last weekend. We learned and shared stories from the past, around the tables at luncheon and Pancake Breakfast, as well as in conversations and program for Dear Mad’m.. Can you help us solve some mysteries?

Sis came by the Chamber office and shared how Ray Knuteson’s home was moved from Down River to Indian Meadows years ago. I’d forgotten that move. John and Alice Covert also had a large home down at Ferry Point that CalTrans bought the property out from under. Their home was moved except for the large fireplace. Does anyone know where it was moved, and if it is still in existence? Besides the Coverts, we’d like to know more about the families living down at Ferry Point at that time. Can anyone fill us in on Fred Crooks, who was called “Dear Sir” in the book? How about Clarence, “Cy,” Jenson who was known as “Up’n up” or who his wife, “Nora” was? Did anyone know the family well enough to know their baby boy, “Benji or what his real name was?” We have found out “Frenchy” was Henry Marquette. Does anyone know more about Frenchy or when he drowned in the Klamath River?
I’d especially like to know more about the young girl, called “Millicent,” who visited Stella while she was writing about living in a cabin on the mining claim along the Klamath River. in 1946-8.
Any other information about Happy Camp and especially the area south on Highway 96 around Ferry Point, its residents, visitors and history from about 1946 to 1955 in particular would be appreciated. Then, there is the story of the three ladies who moved there later. When did they come, and what do you know about Marie Miller, Vivian Witt and Joan Richardson? Thank you for your help in learning more of these details.

October My-ena-ca Art Show was great!!

Some of our local Happy Camp artists had a very well attended art show Friday; the fifth My-ena-ca Show was at the Klamath-Siskiyou Art Center! Myanna is one of the trio artists that presented their work and her sister even brought music and the gentle folk tunes they played made a beautiful background for a wonderful get together. Veronica Rassmussen had some lovely colored paintings and Nena Creasy had some especially nice metalwork that she has created!! There were beautiful pieces to enjoy and to inspire you!

It was great to see Don and Jane Hall from Yreka. Don and Jane have been enjoying travel and Don keeps taking exceptional photography since retirement. It was fun to introduce Gloria Chappelear to my son Stephen. Steve has changed a bit since she taught him Sunday School about twenty years ago! Old Friends and also new friends like Megan Hogue who is the new RSP teacher since Liz Laney retired.

Thanks Denise Bearding, Jennifer and Glenn Rickel, Rachel and Tai Kim, Chris Magarian for the delicious supper, hadn’t planned to eat but Stephen said it was great and he was right! Enjoyed the Taylors Sausage, Massaged Kale, Cucumber Salad, BBQ’d Marconi Peppers and delicious quiche-like dish! Yum! Robyn couldn’t leave the Football game so I brought her a dish also, last plate of supper as there was a very large and congenial (and hungry) crowd.

I think the Art Center needs a playground also!! It is such fun to see the younger ones playing together under the Bigfoot Statue but rather worrying for the mom’s who keep a watchful eye as the kids frolic with the traffic in the nearest thing to a traffic jam besides five o’clock weekday afternoons at the post office. A town without a single stoplight doesn’t have much traffic most of the time! A number of our citizens get around on foot or bicycles!!

Great to see the younger set growing up with such friendly Klamath neighbor gatherings and appreciation of the metal work painting and other artistic endeavors of our local neighbors!!

James Simmons & Dante Gjordanengo Achieve Eagle Scout

by Judy Bushy
Great accomplishment in becoming Eagle Scouts was celebrated in Yreka Saturday. The forty-ninth and fiftieth boys go from childhood to becoming men who are trustworthy, thrifty, loyal, cheerful, strong, brave, kind, clean, courteous, reverent, friendly, helpful and obedient leaders!! Troop 57 has had 50 become Eagles Scouts in the past 63 years!!

James Simmons from Seiad Valley is number 49 and Dante Giordanengo is number 50. It was a great day for the Troop and yet rather sad as they will be parting for awhile until more boys and leaders begin again.

It was great to see Tim Wilhite, Jerry & Tammy Schumacher from Happy Camp. Dan especially enjoyed seeing Jim (and Georgie) Blanchard, who was such a help to Dan mentoring him in fire camp supply.
