New Year Prayer 2012

Dear Father, Thank you for giving me
A few freinds who know me and love me still,
A thankful heart to give you praise always in everything,
A trusting mind to keep on believing in You,
no matter what the future holds,
A humble, pleasing personality with a teachable dispositon
A thoughtful, kind, and caring touch,
A forgiving and understanding spirit,
A loving and accepting attitude
to communicate Your Love to every life I touch,
A worthwhile work into which I can put muy best efforts
and help make my world a better place in which to live and
A life that will make a difference, not ony in my world,
In my street, and most of all, in my home.
Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer
Gratefully, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Winter Solstice Bonfire under Giant Dream Catcher

Wednesday was the night for the Burning under the Giant Dream Catcher.
Thanks to Jeff for getting a great bonfire going! It was a very chilly evening but the bonfire area was warm and toasty.

Dennis Day had the hot cider heated on a camp stove, and Dolly Elston had popped popcorn that afternoon. Mark also brought chips and salsa.

Many thanks to Patty Sherman, our local yoga and drumming instructor, for not only coming and drumming, but for bringing a fascinating assortment of drums and other instruments. They were great! Others, like Terri Winslow also brought a drum or instrument and there was some singing, even new songs created for the occasion.

A scarecrow figure of a fisherman, representing a poor fishing season, was guest of honor. Lists of things they are going to “let go of,” were burned in the bonfire and people had a chance to have “their say” on things from rescuing cats to keeping children and families safe together. Bob Schmalzbach shared about the new Internet radio program from Happy Camp on IF radio!

The Chamber of Commerce bonfire took place Wednesday, Winter Solstice night under the Giant Dream Catcher, lit up with lights for the occasion. It was a good time, with music and refreshments around a warm bonfire! The best was seeing friends and neighbors we hadn’t seen for awhile, but stopped by for awhile to visit and sing or drum. Dennis shared the “Rebuild the Dream,” which seemed a quite logical beneath the giant Dream Catcher.

Next year’s winter solstice has reportedly believed by some people to be a momentous occasion of some sort according to the Mayan calendar. Since the Bible says only God knows when the end of the age will come, I’m sure the Mayans didn’t know either, but makes life interesting with all the rumors! We wonder what progress will be made to “Rebuild the Dream” (as the American Dream needs some work in the coming days.) But that’s why it is so great to have a new beginning as we see the New Year turn a new leaf on the calendar. A very Happy New Year to all!

Happy Camp town is all Lit UP!!!

All week the children have been looking forward to a talk with the man with white whiskers in the red suit. Friday was the annual Community Tree Lighting.
The Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce usually puts on this event each year and this year, in a great show of community unity, the Outdoor Club stepped forward and offered to help. Chamber president, Cathleen Searle, was busy printing the fliers and busily collecting oranges from Double J, cider from Raley’s, candy canes from Rays. Frontier Café and the Pizza House had specials so families who had little time before the Tree lighting could grab a quick supper . Doreen Mitchell and Nadine McElyea were busy popping the popcorn which smelled tantalizingl It was a very cold evening!
Instead of the caroling there was a very special song! David Arwood is one of the teachers of the Karuk Language and Culture Class at Happy Camp High School. The kids were spending all of class time this week learning “Winter Night Song.” Silent Night translated “ikxaram uskaaxti” winter night, “ishyav ikzdrum.” The song continues to picture a bright warm fire on a dark winter night when stories are told of long ago which help us to learn and grow. This Winter Night Song is sung to the tune of Silent Night. It was translated into Karuk by Auntie Violet Super and Sarah Supahan with help from Bill Bright. It was a most enjoyable musical addition to the evening!
The new lights that had been donated made a beautiful tree. At the top was a large star. It reminded me of a year George Chambers made a star for the top of the tree. When you drive down Highway 96 through Happy Camp the tree and the star is certain to be a bright sight on a cold winter night! Once the lights were lit, Santa Claus arrived in a red fire truck. He was greeted by cheerful children all running to hug him! He made it to a chair where he presided over the rest of the evenings events. Eileen Tiraterra deserves special appreciation as the elf that stood by Santa’s side and kept him supplied with candy canes and oranges for the kids.
Thanks to the Happy Camp Chamber and the Outdoor Club who showed community unity by jointly putting on this annual event for the children. The Forest Service keeps the tree lit. Thanks for the elves who served refreshments. To all those who donated and hung the lights and star, drove the fire truck, sang and served refreshments, the cleanup crew, and everyone else who helped—a big THANK YOU!

Grange held Holiday Bazaar Dec 4rd

The morning after the Community Tree Lighting was the annual Holiday Bazaar at the Grange. Walking in the door of the Happy Camp Grange and smelling the cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven was tantalizing. Who could resist!
A wonderful assortment of beautiful gifts were available! Tanya had knit hats of several varieties, serape’s and baby blanket and cap combination gift sets in such a rainbow of shades and colors. Looking at those colors made one think of all sort of assorted ice cream treats! Rich Kelly had his beautiful jade jewelry. Bob and Rosie Bley had beautiful commemorative pens made of the wood from the old Happy Camp High School gym floor Bob turns the pens on his lathe and installs the ink and trim to make a really beautiful pen. Beth Buchanan was on hand with the Bigfoot Cookbook which is sold to make it possible for the land where Old Town Park is located, become public property Sharon Whitman and Linda Davis had all sorts of amazing things from knit hats to well, you’d just have to see all the things they had. It was great. Linda Thompson had candy trees and lollipops as well as other creations she’d made. Virginia Moehring had assistance of two girls who were helping sell See’s Candy for Corey! Terri Winslow had beautiful old jewelry for sale.
Keeping everyone well fed and happy, of course, Ruth Bain who organized this event for the Grange was busy making a delicious homemade potato soup as well as the cinnamon rolls and had her handicrafts. It amazes me all that Ruth accomplishes from her daily work as High School Secretary where she’s been coping with remodeling for seeming forever, and still has time for crafts and baking which everyone enjoys fully!!

Holiday Packages for the Troops
Support our local armed service men and women through the Chamber of Commerce. Holiday Care Packages for our local troops has a deadline for mailing in mid-November so we need your help now. If you know of anyone from the local area serving in the military, please let the Happy Camp Chamber of Commerce know so that we can send them packages for the Holiday. Please get them in early. Anything you would like to send is welcome: letters, holiday cards, donations, or gifts for the packages. Please call Rosemary Boren (493-2800) or Chamber of Commerce (493-2900) or drop off donations to be included in the packages at Forest Lodge or the Chamber Office at 35 Davis Road. We would like to send them a little bit of home and the community’s appreciation for all they do! Great time to make sure they get some appreciation from home! We want to send to Seiad Valley servicemen or women also so please remember them.
