Appreciation for Good Results for Breast Cancer Awreness

by Judy Bushy
Saturday night there was also an event to climax the special Breast Cancer Awareness that Marble Mountain Gift Company has been supporting.

You should have seen all of the creative bra designs that were made and displayed at the Gift Shop, which is Happy Camp’s newest business on Davis Road. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all through the month people brought in more creative designs and then they were to be auctioned off at a dinner Saturday evening. There was a great turn out for the dinner and the dinner cooked by Bob Parry’s crew was great.

Alan Dyar was the mc and appreciated the community participation for the Breast Cancer Awareness Dinner recently sponsored by the Marble Mountain Gift Company. It was great to see the financial support to this cause even in these hard economic times, which amounted to a large donation to the cause of Breast Cancer.

“He was so pleased with the participation, which was fun. If you missed this dinner at the Grange last Saturday evening, you missed a great time and great food.”

Some of the decorated bras brought $250 and $300 in the auction and the total for donation to the breast cancer purpose was $3,744.65 For this Parry’s Market and Marble Mountain Gift Co would like to extend a huge heartfelt Thank you. To all who made the bras, bought the bras and attended the dinner, thank you for making this event a huge success!

What great fun at Bigfoot Jamboree 2012!!

Parry’s 1st place Commercial or Business float.

Tapasarara float of karuk Tribe dancers won for Organizations.

by Judy Bushy
The Happy Camp Coordinating Council is to be commended for all the hard work and planning that goes into the Bigfoot Jamboree before it seems to always “just happen” on Labor Day weekend! Thank you to Linda Zink, Sammi Offield, Leonie Jacobson, Donna McCulley, Montine Blevins, and Savannah from the bank and to all the others who worked on various aspects of our Hometown Festival every Labor Day: Bigfoot jamboree!!!

The parade was wonderful. Bob Goodwin was the MC and then announced the awards down at the River Park. The judges were Bob Hokanson, Cheryl Scruggs and Gary Burnett’s sister, Terry.

In the Business or Commercial float category, third place was the Bigfoot Towing and Lawn Mower Races. You really have to see these Lawn Mower Races put on by the Outdoor Club! I heard that Aaron Martin won the race Saturday evening but, didn’t hear the outcome of the Sunday evening races. Bob threw in that he had taken his lawnmower to be repaired at Bigfoot Towing, but they didn’t get it going 70 mph mowing his lawn.

The second place Commercial float was a red truck driven by Bonnie Alvarez with red spots all over. It was the Ladybug Shuttle from Forest Lodge. They had antennae and red shirts with the black dots decorating! They had a great deal of fun too!!

First place in the Commercial floats was Parry’s Market and they stuck to the the theme, Generations. Their float showed the generation of the Roaring 20s! the newlyweds, Mary and Erik were on the float with my neighbor, Carol Day..

Third place for Organizations was the Old Volks & Folks from Grants Pass. They had half a dozen old Volkswagens that were in different shapes, one had a cute trailer, and one looked like a mini-“hummer”. So glad that they came over the mountain to help make our Bigfoot Jamboree so much fun!

Second place in Organization floats was the River Valley 4H clubs horsemanship project. They had beautiful horses to drive, ride or walk and the miniatures. There were even a few on the end with “ stick” horses.

First place for Organizations was the Karuk dancers, They had the word Pasarara on their float which I’ll have to look up in the Karuk Dictionary to see the meaning.

The Individual category trophy went to Kayla Whitehouse. She does a marvelous job with her baton twirling.

The grand prize for all of the floats and parade entries was Marbke Mountain Gift Company! there was a red head from I love Lucy!! There were characters from “Grease” also….(remember when Mr. Saler put on a production of Grease years ago in the late 80s)

Parry’s Market float. It was great with the newlyweds, Mary and Eric, and our neighbor Carol Day on the Roaring 20s float!

The singer, Lenny Green sang at the park after the awards were given. He sang such fun Bigfoot songs. His song about the Bigfoot Byway has become a well loved favorite! You can hear him sing this song at http://www.landofthebigfoot.com/byway.htm.

2nd ‘Rockin the Klamath’ fun at the RiverPark

Key of Three was the headliner band for 3rd annual Rockin’ the Klamath

jbushy
Saturday was a beautiful day in the park for Rockin’ the Klamath, but the weather was warm. That is probably why there were so many wishing to win the Raffle for the Inflatable Kayak with pump, paddle and lifevest! Just the thought of a cool ride down Indian Creek in that Kayak sounded mighty refreshing! The Kayak was donated by James Buchner of Klamath River Resort Inn who was at the park bright and early Saturday setting up a screen tent. Shane Gottleib and his family who have Affordable Memories and More were also busy setting up the sound system as well as their booth.

The Seniors had a pull tab booth. Rich Kelly had his beautiful jewelry. much of it made of Happy Camp Jade. River Connection booth had both jewelry they had created and even a shirt of mail. Linda Martin was selling and signing her newly published, River Girl. Affordable Kemories & More had a booth of absolutely beautiful photographs!! They also made a DVD which will be available in the Chamber office in coming days.

Cheyenne Moore favored us by singing the National Anthem to begin the program. Happy Camp Has Talent master of ceremonies was Ray (the roofer) Masters. He introduced the talented Happy Campers who sang and did great performances. Ballots were given when the tickets were collected at the gate so that the audience could vote on the contestants. Paul and Colleen Lefleur and Todd Gilbert tied for first place winners. The two other performances that won were Dinah’s dancing ladies and Cheyenne Moore. It was very difficult to choose between the performances because we enjoyed them all and they were each so unique. The performances left some time to spare, although many had already voted so others were cajoled to overcome stage fright and show us their talent. I never knew Judy Hahn wrote and recited epic poetry. Loved hearing her recite “I’m a cowboy.” Jeanne Burrer sang the Patsy Cline song, “Crazy” very well. We also enjoyed Tera Haute singing “Blue Bayou”. Lisa sang “The Tree Song ==Starlight”. It never fails to surprise me how talented so many Klamath Neighbors are in so many ways!!All in all, it was difficult to decide upon a winner, as shown by the number of ties and all were greatly appreciated. Hopefully they will be prepared to share their talents again the next time when we have Happy Camp Has Talent and not be shy.

An Oregon band, Ponderosa Breeze, played next as people enjoyed Polish Dogs, sodas and smoothies. Rosemary Boren kept food service going and the smoothies were so refreshing. She was assisted by many volunteers, especially Yukon, Charlotte, and Cliff who slaved over the hot grill through the hot hours of the day. Some enterprising young ladies picked blackberries along the River Park pond and enjoyed FRESH blackberry smoothies! Thank you for all the help Angelina!!

The Happy Camp Coordinating Council which are the folks that will be putting on the Bigfoot Jamboree August 31 through September 1 & 2 ran the beer booth at Rockin the Klamath. They will be looking forward to seeing you again at the River Park August 31-September 2nd for Bigfoot Jamboree!!

State of Jefferson Brotherhood Motorcycle friends helped out at the park also. It was good to have them there. Half of those who had planned to help out in that capacity had been called out due to the Dillon Fire southwest of Happy Camp near Dillon Creek. One can never plan when a wildfire will occur and sometimes it happens when you have other plans. However, you just drop everything and go. We appreciate the firefighters and all their support workers who were fighting the fire.

Next year will be the 3rd annual Rockin the Klamath tentatively scheduled for end of June. Plan now to update your Talent and put on your dancing shoes and plan to come then.
